M&P15-22

Discussion of rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders

I have read the Colt is all metal, but the controls still feel like an airsoft rifle.

The safety requires a 180 degree throw from safe to fire, rather than the normal 90 degree throw on semi-auto AR's.

Here is a review of the Colt.

Even though the S&W is mostly plastic apart from the barrel and some other inside parts, I think I am planning on getting M&P 15-22 over the Colt.

Well it might be awhile before I get my hands on this one. The dealer called and said it might be 6 months before this ships. He said S&W has been having difficulty making these rifles and is WAY behind on orders.
What is out on the market was what was made in the first batch. :-(

Cabela's has it in their flyer for their Aug 29th sale as a 4 hour Hot Buy for $429, regular price $469.

There is an extensive article on it in the October Shooting Times which just came today.

Frontiersman said they thought they would have one in the first week of Sept.

Thanks for the info Dean, I may be in line. This sale is below dealer cost, assuming they have the rifle in stock. In the Shooting Times article Dick Metcalf praises this rifle and goes into some detail about why a dedicated 22 is inherently more accurate and reliable than a conversion unit.

Dick also likes their new piston driven AR from Smith, but neglects to give us pricing. Kinda nice to know what they want for the guns, but then the gun scribes don't generally pay.

I stopped at Cabela's Owatonna today. I asked if they had any for me to look at. He said they had 6 but were told not to put them out until Saturday morning. He said they will go fast as the guns on these limited offers do.

I already looked at the MP 15-22 at Ahlman's Shooter's Round Up this past weekend. Much better trigger than the plastic one on the Colt. Plastic frame, but it looked fine. I did not like all the rails on the forearm. SW rep said that no extra magazines were available now. All are being used on complete rifles. Probably will be available later.

Got more info than I did, they would not say how many they had in stock or how many tickets they plan to hand out. Cabela's have them in stock at the Owatonna location and on Saturday morning will hand out tickets to those first in line that say they want it at the Saturday morning, 4 hour sale price. A $40 savings over Cabela's so called regular price, which seems to be pretty good, almost $200 less than the Colt model.

I guess I will wait for the forum reviews on the S&W, many forum reviews have been pretty good overall on the Colt, especially on the Colt's accuracy.

I have always avoided these 4 hour sales thinking there will be a large crowd. (And I live near Owatonna!) Just how many people will be in line at 8:00 AM? I have never driven by that early.

Well one of you guys has to buy one so the rest of us know if it's worthwhile. I'm willing to forgo the 8 1/2% discount to let somebody else be the guinea pig.

I have mine on order and my training partner Jon Thompson , we teach carry and other classes together, ordered two more from his wholesaler Bill Hicks. They also told him mags will come later and would not take a backorder. Jon advises his regular price will be around the $430 mark. See and regsiter on his website a http://www.riversidesportinggear.com, noting mnguntalk as how you found the site Please note that Jon's shop is attached to his home and therefore prices are quite reasonable. Evening appointments are available during the week and during the days on weekends. The shop is not for browsing, check the website for stock or call Jon for pricing /availability on a specific gun

While I am not involved in his FFL business Jon is a stocking dealer in Elk River for Sig and Smith and also has access to Glocks, Kimbers and most anything else, although carry handguns and tactical rifles and shotguns are his specialty. I know Jon's price will be better than Cabelas or Gander unless it is a big sale or you are using Cabelas points, etc. He just received the 2 sequentially numbered SIG 556 ER and has them priced at $1,300. Check the website for M&P's, used and consignment guns
