Reading up on ARs is always a good idea. I would also suggest that you look hard to find someone that you trust that can talk you through the AR building process. When people I know or my relatives approach me about buying a rifle, or any firearm for that matter, I sit them down in front of the computer and tell them to bring a can of Mountain Dew or a cup of coffee, because it's gonna be a while. I then go through sites and tell them what to buy and what to avoid.
For building ARs, the best sites for parts are:
Brownells.com
RainierArms.com
MidwayUSA.com
BravoCompanyUSA.com
Otherwise, manufacturer websites are good places to go. In particular:
Daniel Defense
Noveske Rifleworks
LMT
Spikes Tactical
Del-Ton
For full-built rifles, you have a lower echelon and an upper echelon of rifles. The basic/lower echelon are the standard carbines with minimal options or mil-spec configurations. The quality brands are Bravo Company, Rock River, Colt, S&W and Spikes Tactical. This is not fully inclusive. For upper echelon companies, you will get more rifle but you will also pay for it. Companies like Daniel Defense, Noveske, LMT, POF-USA, LWRCi,etc.
