jp8775 wrote:Ok two subjects: Annealing brass. I have been reading a lot about it looks like some guys have U-tube videos on it and they are heating it to high some say that will ruin it. I like the case in a pan of water to keep the base cool process best. I guess does anyone do it and how hot, I have heat sticks I do not know if the temp guns go that hot or not. I need to get one for the barrel anyway. Next: my Hornady AOL case length gauge kit came a week ago but no .338 proof cases, well that came today. Also the bullet comparator kit came to with 20+ gauges. Wow is this easy to do, how far off the lands? I now can control it to a nats ass. I am going to get all that Lapua brand brass from Mike tomorrow morning, it also includes some plinking brass to add to my stock I already have. I am going to be shooting Saturday afternoon for sure maybe friday also.

Just get a Benchsource annealing machine, best way to go if you have the cash. I made my own, it’s amazing, likely the nicest in the world if I do say so myself. Any method other than using a machine will leave you open to slight differences in hardness, which of course means differences in neck tension and neck tension differences can manifest in accuracy and velocity variations.

Anneal brass by heating neck and shoulder to 800-850 degrees, then quench neck down in water.
Some say quenching is not required - first time you pick up a hot case, you will agree with me - quench!
Doug Giraurd makes the best annealing maching out there - but I use my own motorized design.
