Bolt action .22lr mecca?

Postby FJ540 on Tue Mar 19, 2013 8:26 am

Ken down at Atomic reinvigorated my itch for a decent bolt action .22lr for plinking when he showed me his savage mark 2 fv-sr. I've got a marlin 795, and it's a great shooter. I've just wanted a bolt gun too for some unexplainable reason.

Is there someplace in the metro (or surrounding area) that's got more than the usual stash of .22's for reasonable prices?

I was at Ahlmans about a week ago and they had 2-3 of those savage tactical .22's. They look really cool and I want one, especially at the price. I have not got around to that yet however. Ahlmans never disappoints though.

Never been there. Might be my road trip destination for the day.

I'm actually more curious about the 21" barrel version of the same gun. I can put a big knob on the bolt myself, and threading is just as easy. Model 26700

I've got a call in to scheels and a PM to Matt to see if there's any around. If Ken was actually at work yet, I'd call him to check too.

If you have a Marlin 795 it (supposedly) uses the same magazines as the new Marlin XT-22 (there are tube fed and magazine versions) bolt action. I've seen them all over the usual suspects (Capras, Fleet Farm, Gander Mountain) up in the north metro - might be worth dragging along one of your 795 mags to triple check if this capability of of interest.

Ahlman's was 20 over MSRP on the fv-sr's, and that's $70 over web pricing of everyone else (a measly 30% surcharge). No wonder they had 4 on hand. They quote me about 100 over reasonable on another savage similar to what I'm after, and I politely just put it back in the rack after countering at $30 under their real price trying to make it an un-wasted trip, which they declined. Out the door empty handed, I commented they were a little too proud of their stuff as I left.

Half way between owatonna and mankato, I decide to go west.

Almost got a marlin at Scheels, but I really didn't want the iron sights on the barrel - too much like my 795 only in a bolt action. But that trip was at least well worth it - got Erik a rock chucker supreme, and myself another K of WSRP's and a pound of the elusive A1680 powder I've been looking for. Score! Not feeling it for any of the assortment of .17hmr's (after all, there's ammo in spades for those, but still too close in cost to reloading .223 for me to want to get one) - I just want another .22lr. I leave without any guns.

Went over to gouger mountain (across the street from Scheels) and found out who ahlman's was price checking. They too had a fv-sr in stock, but it was 20 more than ahlman's at $299. :( No surprise I didn't buy anything there.

So I was headed home without a rifle, or so I thought. I still had a couple places I could hit on the way through. First in line for the back 9 was Arnzen. Didn't expect what happened next: there on the wall was the gun I was after. :o Not only did they have it, it was really reasonably priced too! So a few minutes later another 4473 is in the books, and I'm headed home with my new Savage Mark 2 FV 21" heavy barrel bolt action with accutrigger.

Marty and I had a nice chat as we took care of the formalities - a very smooth and pleasant experience.

Congratulations, persistance pays off!
I've got the light barreled version of your rifle, and it's a great shooter. With the heavy barrel it should be fabulous.

.22lr doesn't really need a heavy barrel. I just wanted one.

Got that same rifle for my son last spring for his 10th birthday. We shoot our .22 savages together and you cant beat the outta the box accuracy of the savage.
I'm a fan of the accu trigger. Most .22 come with a nice heavy lawyer trigger.
My son wants a heavier stock . He likes the thumb hole stock on my rifle and he does tighten his groups up shooting my rifle.
I had to order the one for my son . Savage .22 bolts were scarce at the time I was looking.
Now where can we get some .22 ammo?

The accutrigger is probably the best thing that happened to these guns. I tried getting my buddy to pony up and get one on the .243 he got for his wife, but he wouldn't listen. Maybe we can retrofit it if she takes to shooting more. That axis with the craptastic stock is still capable of cloverleafs at 100yds though. Savage makes a good shooter regardless of price point.

I'm currently torn as to what to do about the plastic junk they call a stock on this thing. I can either make a tube gun conversion for it (which would be cool and fun), or I can just get a boyd's and call it a day. If they had any of the color combos I like in stock, I probably would've just bought one last night.

I expect this to primarily remain a range toy, so the weight isn't much of an issue.

Sounds like a sweet weapon. I'm still shooting my very first gun that I ever owned. In 1972 (I was 14) my dad gave me a brand new Remington 552 SPeedmaster. It shoots 22 short, .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle and is extremely accurate, even for a semi-auto. I just pulled it out of the safe for a good cleaning and oiling and BOY, did it bring back memories of the great times I spent shooting with my dad.

I'm thinking of getting another .22 ,something along the lines of your's but I'm not sure I can ever put my 552 to rest, and put another .22 in the safe with it (well, except my Neos pistol). I also located the 50 cal box filled with .22 lr copper plated hollow points that I "put in a safe place" and could NOT remeber where I put them...

I hope you enjoy shooting that new .22 as I do my "Old One" (still looks like the day it came out of the box 41 yrs. ago on May 18).

The most popular stock options over in the precision shooting community are the Boyd's Tacticool - http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/product.h ... 1&cat=1215 and the Rhineland Leopard (similar to an AI) - http://www.troupsystems.com/Leopard%20s ... 0stock.htm. If cost isn't a concern, Manners will inlet their T4 for the the Savage MK2 - http://mannersstocks.com/tactical/.

If I was going to paint it black (or any other color), I'd just make one. I started woodworking when I was 5, power tools @7, and was left to my own devices by 9. Still have all my fingers. But thanks for taking the time to share those links.

I've got STD's to make for customers, but when I take some time off I'll probably be making an aluminum frame stock. I've got lots of material on hand and a couple ideas I haven't seen done yet. Once things migrate to my cnc mill, it'll leave me some cycle time to play with other stuff.

There are a bunch of good designs (primarily made for center fire rifles) if you're looking for some inspiration. Check out the Whiskey 3 chassis from Kinetic Reasearch Group and the XLR chassis as examples. And share what you come up with - I'm still looking for something new for my MK2. :)
