You had me too. And here I was just trying to help. Serves me right.
Carry on.

I can assure you I live under no bridges. But the 5-7 would be my dream gun. So I'll settle for an XD

I don't want a compact, I don't like compacts, so I'd prefer a normal size gun but not something that my hand wont fit in.
I'd be curious to learn the reasons for your dislike of 'compacts', as the XD compact doubles as a service model size.
XDs are sold in 3". 4", and 5"barrels. I don't know of any of these to be abnormal in size.
In the XD line the difference between the 'service model' and the ' 45c/ compact'(both 4" barrels) is the grip.
The xd 45c(compact) with the shorter, 10r grip is a practical carry piece.. which also takes full size 13r mags.
But as others have offered, if you if you are going to train to any level of proficiency, the difference in ammo prices above 9mm might be an expense worth considering.
And the 3" subcompacts are a bit more concealable. Given the subcompacts can use both the shorter and full sized mags, from everything you've posted the XD9sc would seem to fill your current requirements.
