I'm not convinced. I know a guy who used a 5.7 carbine to shoot a deer (he hunts from a wheelchair). He had nothing good to say about it.

He has since switched from the 5.7 pistol to an HK USP compact in 9mm for carry.

one of these? My uncle loves his 5.7

Possibly why I want one so bad. He also has a 357 Desert Eagle. But that's far too bulky for me.

And if you still think I'm a troll I can start name dropping and have them confirm I'm not. I'm just very new to handguns and guns in general

I haven't given any thought to you being a troll, but feel free to name drop.

Well, back on topic. XD Service Model 4" or XD 45 ACP? pros? cons?

I don't want a compact, I don't like compacts, so I'd prefer a normal size gun but not something that my hand wont fit in.

I'd be curious to learn the reasons for your dislike of 'compacts', as the XD compact doubles as a service model size.
XDs are sold in 3". 4", and 5"barrels. I don't know of any of these to be abnormal in size.
In the XD line the difference between the 'service model' and the ' 45c/ compact'(both 4" barrels) is the grip.
The xd 45c(compact) with the shorter, 10r grip is a practical carry piece.. which also takes full size 13r mags.
But as others have offered, if you if you are going to train to any level of proficiency, the difference in ammo prices above 9mm might be an expense worth considering.
And the 3" subcompacts are a bit more concealable. Given the subcompacts can use both the shorter and full sized mags, from everything you've posted the XD9sc would seem to fill your current requirements.

I was looking through the Springfield Armory site and found this http://www.springfield-armory.com/xd.php?version=98 which would, I guess, be my ideal. I guess when i think compact i think of short uncomfortable grips. do you have a link or something i can look up the XD9sc? I do have a fancy towards the 5" barrels that the Springfield Armory site has (and pure black is the only option in my book)

I'd say a 9mm either a Glock or M&P. Reliable & cheaper to shoot.

I liked shooting my uncle's Glock22 but I'm not sure I'd actually like to own one. It might be a nice starter pistol though. I do have a draw for .45ACP and would honestly prefer that, but I'm worried about being limited in shooting due to cost of ammo. Anyone know of a cheap bulk ammo supplier? My uncle says he buys all of his ammo online for a good price but I don't know what constitutes a "good price". Maybe I should just hit up my uncle and see if he'll sell me one of his guns. haha
