looking into possibly buying an XD or XDM in .40
Considering the tactical length as well..
Anyone care to comment?

The XD is Springfield run at a Glock clone, it's draw back is the trigger, in stock form it sucks. With a trigger job they can be excellent.
The M&P is S&W's 2nd run at a polymer and they did a darn good job, out of the box the trigger is as good as the Glock but again a different feel from the Glock closer to a traditional feel.
M&P sales are on the huge rise, LE seem to love them. In USPSA you will still see ostly Glocks followed by XD's, I attribute that mostly to the investment people have and the retraining need to switch.
I've shot all three and I can shoot the Glock the best, so that is what I own. That said I'd find a way to try them and see what works for you. There is not a 'BAD' one in the bunch.
