looking into possibly buying an XD or XDM in .40

Considering the tactical length as well..

Anyone care to comment?

Why do you say that? I only ask because I seem to recall you shooting an XDM at a steel shoot earlier this summer (but maybe i'm remembering wrong). Did something happen to make you think they are garbage?

I personally like the XD series but I also like Glocks and I really like 1911's so I guess I'm just diverse.

Seriously! I have known Mac for--what, 5 or 6 years now?--and everything that comes out of his mouth is still a complete enigma to me. But I do seem to recall an XD blowing up in his hand some years ago, I think :D . It is possible that that incident may have influenced his view of the XD.

I do seem to recall him emptying a full magazine at one steel plate on more than one occasion

OK this is my presepective. The Glock is the original, they run 100% if you leave them alone. They don't have what some would term a traditional safety and the trigger feels different than anything else you would shoot, almost springy.

The XD is Springfield run at a Glock clone, it's draw back is the trigger, in stock form it sucks. With a trigger job they can be excellent.

The M&P is S&W's 2nd run at a polymer and they did a darn good job, out of the box the trigger is as good as the Glock but again a different feel from the Glock closer to a traditional feel.

M&P sales are on the huge rise, LE seem to love them. In USPSA you will still see ostly Glocks followed by XD's, I attribute that mostly to the investment people have and the retraining need to switch.

I've shot all three and I can shoot the Glock the best, so that is what I own. That said I'd find a way to try them and see what works for you. There is not a 'BAD' one in the bunch.

XD over the Glock has a natural pointing angle.

XD has backstrap safety, less likely to shoot self in foot while reholstering. (See: Police Officers reholstering, shoot self in thigh/leg/foot)

Glock is the 'original' plastic gun, some like it that way.

I went XD for the above, plus lefty-friendly out of the box. XDM wasn't out yet, but isn't available in sub-compact, and costs significantly more. I do like some of the improvements, but I kinda like the blocky look.

I' ve shot Three different size XD's and shot quite a few glocks in my time. Nvere had major issues with any of them. Any issues were with not liking the sights on the glocks i shot. The XD's shot , for me, better then the glocks. With a sub-compadt XD at 15 yards drilled a 2 inch group on the x-ring. Never was able to shoot a glock the same way. The original xd's did kind of have a sloppy trigger, but thats what you're gonna get with a double action only striker fired pistol out of the box. If you can make it out, ahlmans shooters round up might some on the test fire table.

:rotf:

guy asks about two specific models of 1 brand of pistol, and everyone can't wait to recommend what they like better. Might as well suggest he buy a 1911, HK, Sig, Hi Point, Jennings, Desert Eagle, Coonan and a Para to round things out.

So, if I had to pick from an XD and XDM (like the original question asked), I'd just get the normal XD. They work fine for what they are. If an XD is your dream gun then maybe get the M as they have some upgrades. But its not meant to be a race pistol in my mind, so I'd go for the base form of it, and save my super slick pistol for a different platform.

XD's are a competitor to Glock, not necessarily meant to be smooth as butter, but they work when you want them to. At least in my experience.

Now for the hypocrisy. I like my Glock better! Get that.

I've got a couple of XD's. I have an XD45 tactical (long slide). It shoots great and goes bang every time I pull the trigger, provided there's a live round in the chamber.

My wife shoots an XD9 service. There have been zero issues with either of them, they shoot exactly where they're pointed. I'm very pleased with my XD's.

Yeah, yeah I've also got several Glocks. Like 'em all just fine.

Tween,

If you have a chance to get out this way I can get some posters to you and we'll run over to Delano's Gunclub and you can try out a G22 and a G23 if you haven't tried a glock before. 8-)

I'd say if you get a chance go t Bill's or Ahlmans and try the ones you're looking. I think Ahlmans still lets you try befor you buy. Or you can just get some people from here who have what you are looking for and , if they're willing, go to the range and test them out. If you can test it before you buy you will not regret anything later. It always sucks when buying a $600 gun and get it to the range and find out that it makes a better boomerang than a sidearm.
