New pup

Here is the new addition, and hopefully future bird hunter. Little different than the lab we started out looking for, but I think the little german shorthair will fit in nicely.

Crate training and obedience coming up, but he does his work outside pretty well already. 8 weeks old

nice looking dog, let me know how it works out as I've always liked the colors of the GSP.

Congratulations guys. Great looking little dog and I think you made a wise choice. Should be a awesome hunters' companion and family pet. How's the cat doing?

Cat hasn't made much of an apperance yet. When the puppy gets used to the place, we'll let them work out their differences I guess.

Great looking pup! A year from now he will be getting ready for his first season. Here's my girl at about 18-months. She's 5 now.

Congrats! Let us know how the training goes. Where did you end up getting him?

His family hails from Anoka. He was the first one to leave the litter at one day shy of 8 weeks. We took a bit of a risk, in order to get a puppy sooner. Most hunting-oriented professional breeders have their pups ready to go in the Spring or early Summer so they are ready to hunt the next season as soon as possible, this we found out as no puppies were available anywhere near us, in our price range. (at least that we found)

He does have an AKC pedigree, but no real formal health gaurantee as it was not a professional breeder that he came from. Got to meet both parents and liked what I saw (though the parents could have used a bit more training I thought). On the bright side, he was a little less money. So I'll just cross my fingers that he's free of genetic health problems and call it a trade off. We know what we are getting into anyway, with all of that. I've heard a lot of people say they lost their dog too early, and those dogs were from great, pristine bloodlines, so you never know I guess. We'll hope.

Anyway, crate training is moving along a little at a time. Once thats complete life will be much calmer around the house. The NAVHDA group is a good source of local info on hunting dogs as it turns out.

Health guarantees, while a good sign and nice to have, are very difficult to take advantage of in real life. By the time any health issues come up, you and your fiance will be so attached to the little guy that you wouldn't think of getting rid of him. Most health issues are not fatal, but limit the ability to hunt or be very active. The dogs are usually more than adequate as family pets.

Haha, well I had some help in that department. Just last night we settled it.

Started out as Tango, (possibly a Tango and Cash reference I'm not sure) but she wanted more than one name for formal registration.

So officially he is "Colonel Tango Smith." Had to leave him a few ranks below 5-star General. Hopefully he will adhere to the chain of command eventually.

Ruger and Winchester were on the table for us a little bit. Colt also, but I didn't like Colt as much.

Didn't think of Mauser though, thats a good one.

Wanted something not too common though. Figured otherwise I might hunt with a dog with the same name some day, and that might get confusing.

Since its heritage is German, Mauser is great:

some shotguns from Germany...
-original 'Charles Daly' shotguns
-German made 'Merkel' shotguns
-'Krieghoff'
...but I like 'Heckler' for Heckler & Koch
