Ok,

I'm bringing this to you guys and girls as I am stumped as what to do.

I have carried for almost 3 years. This is ny second run-in (so to speak).

I open carried into Cub Foods on Lake Street 2 days ago. I wasn't intending to leave the car but the wife requested assistance with the bagging and I forgot to cover up.
I had no more than started helping the wife when the young, male (maybe19-20 year old) security guard approached me from behind.

Guard: I'm assuming that you have a permit for that. I felt like he was talking about 3 notches above normal.
Me: Yes
Guard: May I see it please
Me: No as you are not a Law Enforcement Officer
Guard: But this is MY store.

I waited for about 10 seconds and then showed him the permit. He walked back to the front of the store and leaned back up against the wall.

Here's the dilemma.

1. I was "stupid" for not concealing so I feel it was my bad. Now before the flaming starts..I KNOW I do not have to conceal...I do not have a retention holster, but it is a Bersa so it's not
a large weapon and it's tucked firmly into my waist so (in a no fault way) I'm feeling guilty...not WRONG!

2. What would have the (as far as I know) unarmed **guard** done if I DIDN'T have a permit.

Ok...I'm open for suggestions, I have thick skin, but not bulletproof...what would you do now if you were me!

1. I would not have showed him the permit; he has no authority as a peace officer

2. he probably does have authority as agent for the store to ask you to leave, posted or not

I open carry in places like that all the time and I don't worry about it.

Don't fret about not concealing it. It's legal in this state so long as you have a permit, although due to strategic issues I almost always conceal.

But I probably wouldn't have showed my permit to the guard. He hasn't the authority to demand it. Of course he could ask me to leave which I would or he could call the police whom I would present my permit to upon request. Those are the only two things I believe he is authorized to do.

I might have just told the guard that he wanted to see my permit he would have had to show me his pee pee first. Just kidding....

You probably did the right thing.

I imagine if you had asked him "If you I don't show you my permit, are you going to ask me to leave?" his answer would have been yes. Then you would have had to leave. But, you were leaving anyhow.

Or, if you continued to refuse, he may have called the police and then you would have to show them your permit and then they might still ask you to leave or worse, trespass you from the property permanently.

Or you might have left and then he called the cops and gave them your license number and you could have been the host of a nifty felony traffic stop while your ice cream melts all over the upholstery.

Sure, legally he can't demand you show it to him, but he can summon those who have that power and intensify the pissing contest from there. Sometimes the neighborly thing to do is show your permit. And then you can slightly condescendingly ask the security guard, "Huh, so they don't let you carry a gun? Hmm? So, what DO you do around here?"

You can also ask him if he has a permit and why or why not. Blah, blah, blah. I like the guys who open carry and non-confrontationally educate people and invite them to consider getting a permit themselves.

I think you did fine. I can't think of a good reason to escalate from where you were. I'm actually kind of glad he asked you about your permit first instead of making a "man with a gun" phone call. That's progress compared to some previous episodes.

I would have "flashed" him my permit; not handing it to him.

Except I wouldn't have bothered showing my permit. The manager can come over and I'll be happy to explain why they will be taking everything back.
