I've yet to see anyone on these gun forums that need to be "ignored" but they are out there. An example would be someone who contributes little else than "Glocks suck", or "If it's not a 1911, it's junk." Over and over again. You get the idea.
The 2nd Amendment is the ONLY amendment in the Bill of Rights that specifies that it shall not be infringed.

And that's the cool thing about the software -- you get to decide that you don't want to ignore anybody, while others can make very different decisions, without in any way infringing on your ability to make your own, and vice versa.

(I'm still waiting for somebody to write a greasemonkey script that will do what scorefiles did for Usenet news, oh, a zillion years ago, but my guess is that I'll be waiting for awhile.)

Blocking too me seems like self imposed censorship.

You can agree, disagree, scroll or flame away, but if you don't see the post at all, are you any wiser? Even when there are disagreements, (cop bashing gets old really, really quickly) it's still a learning opportunity.

Moderated to keep it civil, absolutely. Locked to end a flame war, apart from saving bandwidth, what's gained?

So does its opposite. :)

I'd be thrilled with a 'hide thread' option. When the train wreck starts back up, or the swat fanboys start cheering, or I start getting irritated, just hide the entire thread and forget it exists.

Me, I get tired of reading folks who make either ignorant or knowingly false accusations of "cop bashing", and tend to use whatever software available to put them on my personal "Not worth the trouble" list.

You can't force me to read something I don't want to. Having software to make it easier is nice (not that I've ever used it here).

Actually, you sort of could: before someone is allowed to post to a thread they have to pass a test on all the previous postings in that thread. If you don't implement such a test, then allowing auto-ignore has little effect. Worse, time is limited; if people think the time they spend here isn't valuable (useful, enjoyable, whatever other measure they use), they'll spend their time elsewhere and miss all the posts. Auto-ignore can let someone get more benefit per unit time, hence be more likely to remain.

Ace and Brit,
You know you're only highlighting the reason you might have made the ignore list, right? taking shots and pokes without adding significantly to the discussion. However vindicated you might feel for scoring points, whether you're right or wrong, you're only skewing the signal:noise ratio. That ratio affects ALL the users and readers of a thread.

Though Pat didn't specify who he meant, I think the intent is clear.

Pat has a point in that when someone ignores you but still participates in a thread it can get disjointed pretty quickly. It's like the childhood squabbles of "Tell Tommy I'm not talking to him" when both the speaker and Tommy are in the same place.

However, as Seth has pointed out, the technology exists both in the PHBBB software and elsewhere, and it's not like you can really prevent it even if you ban the methods. There's always the skip right past the post option. There's no effective way to ensure every poster has read every post before themselves replying. At least not without a lot of work for both the software and user. At what point does THAT become couner productive.

Heck, there are several posts in long threads on other boards where I'm SURE most of the people on page 7 have not read page 1 :-)

I don't know that this one has a solution. Until all involved can control themselves and realize the futility of the subtle knife in actually solving things. I could wish that Joel would read my posts. I couldn't enforce that wish anyway. Making witty jabs won't help that in any way. I could also wish Joel would just come out and say something instead of wording around it and trying to be clever. But he is, after all, a word smith.

While we're making wishes, I wish this whole feud would die down. -- Wish in one hand and **** in another and see which one gets full first or smells worse. :-(
