We'll find water on the moon even if we have to bomb it!

Postby DeanC on Thu Oct 08, 2009 11:02 am

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - NASA hopes to find water on the moon by launching a rocket directly at it. Scientists believe the blast will break up trapped lunar ice allowing them to detect water molecules.

The space agency said it will slam two spacecraft into the moon at 7:30 a.m. EDT Friday in an effort to find water on the moon. NASA is planning a live broadcast for the LCROSS impacts starting at 6:15 a.m. EDT, 3:15 a.m. PDT, Oct. 9, on NASA TV and will stream the event live at http://www.nasa.gov/ntv .

They say future lunar explorations will be less expensive if there is no need to transport water from earth.

The missile will travel at twice the speed of a bullet to the south pole of the moon. The impact is expected to create a huge plume of debris large enough to be seen from Earth by amateur scientists.

The missile will travel at twice the speed of a bullet
That must be some precise, scientific unit of measurement.

I have been staring at one for a while now and it has not moved. I may be wrong but my hypothosis is that twice the speed of a bullet is not all that fast...

I guess they're talking about a different bullet. Let me know when you find that bullet.

So is that as fast as Superman? Or are we talking a bullet that obeys speed limits?

We're still trying to figure that out. Apparently we don't have any real scientists here. BTW, I didn't know that we were that short of water here that we have to resort to bombing the moon for more.

Good point! So it is a very specific velocity then. :)

A lot of different possibilities on velocity. IIRC, 45s typically run 800-900 fps. Assuming 900 fps, that equates to roughly 614 mph. The 7mm-08 rounds that I use hunting run about 2750 fps. That's 1,875 mph. I KNOW there's rounds out there that travel faster than that, too.

So, twice the speed of a bullet could be anywhere from 1,200 mph to well over 3,700 mph.

Yes Westberg, they are going to send a train to the moon.

Try and keep up.

This makes us look bad.
