DPMS offer to the military - worth it?

Postby EJSG19 on Tue Oct 27, 2009 7:31 am

A good friend of mine, who is currently serving in the Air Force passed this along to me simply because he knows I'm interested in such things.

Looks like DPMS is offering a version of their AR-15 to military folks. DPMS is saying $780 if 10 or more rifles are bought.

My question is this. I do not consider myself an expert in AR-15 valuation. At the quoted price, would this rifle be worth it? I'm leaning toward suggesting he wait for AR's to get cheaper, unless he simply wants an AR with his squadron symbol on it to remember his time in the service.

Thoughts?

for a DPMS, it's a decent price if it's really $780.

You can build them cheaper, but you won't get the engraving or the "memorial" of it either.

Well the goof is that he was told by somebody in his squadron that its a $1,200 rifle and their price is $780.

That seemed like a bit of a stretch to me. Especially given the current market for AR-15's. I see them as only getting cheaper.

He's not stretching it. They are a $1000 rifle. And there is THAT much of a mark up.

Having built them, I wouldn't buy another one again. At $780 including shipping, it's a great deal.

I see. Well thats why I ask, I don't know what I'm talking about in this particular arena. Don't even own one myself yet.

Thanks farmerj.

You can buy DPMS complete uppers for about $550.00. Haven't looked lately on lower cost, but you should be able to get pretty close using DPMS parts. As mentioned you would be missing the unit logo. Good price, but not a steal.

MSRP is 904.00 ( http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=46 ) plus ~50 bucks for engraving

They were a 1200.00 a year ago. Now not so much.

I purchased a lower, parts kit, stock, and complete upper at a retail store last November for $750 after tax. I'm not sure that this is that good of a deal. After all, what can engraving cost? Unless I'm missing something here, it seems like a sales gimmick.

Yea, but these are put together and work...........plus you get the t-shirt....... :P

It's not a great deal, and not a bad deal, remember you guys are looking at retail in MN and in some other states where some of the Military bases are located the retail pricing may be all together different (I know on-line is on-line anywhere)........

I would get one just for the memorializing factor, and it is not a permanent as a tat.......

Well worth any minimal price for that, if it is important to your friend. I have a Sig 226 from one of the departments I worked for, they special ordered the guns from Sig so the serial number was your badge number. Very cool, and something I will keep forever.

you are getting a DPMS kit assembled, engraved and shipped to your FFL. All for the price of the parts if you build the rifle yourself.

Look here is the thing - the $$$$ is good on the gun - and the engraving is a nice touch too. $780 SHIPPED is a really decent deal on something to keep forever.

And you can pass it on. Unlike a tat.

The 34th did an order for these rifles as well and I cant wait to get my hands on mine for $780 I see it as a steel especially since it is engraved as that just makes it that much more personal and something I can give to my son. We also did a PARA 1911 order but it turned out that it was a DS version and I DESPISE ruining a 1911 like that so I cancelled that one but that was also a great deal. I really applaud these companies for offering us service members a chance to get a firearm that offers us a chance for a memorial of our time in a war zone.

They're probably still making money on these deals, but yeah, it's cool nonetheless.
