2009 Deer Season Results -

Postby EJSG19 on Mon Nov 09, 2009 2:44 pm

Here is a thread to post your Deer Season Results. I think it would be interesting to see who got what, with pictures being encouraged.

Personally, I had a fun weekend with Sochr000 and Monschman, however as a group we got skunked. Monch said we were going to be jinxed because we saw deer while on the way to deer camp. Unfortunately he was right! For myself, the quiet and relaxation were worth it though. LIttle sad that I didn't get to put my new deer rifle to use this year, but we'll try again next year. I won't have the opportunity to go out again this season unless I hit some public land quick.

So enough of that, lets hear how the rest of you did. Post whether it was a buck (rack size might be nice, but not too much exaggeration :) ) or doe, and as much or as little of the situation (shot distance, how you hunted it, etc).

I need to live vicariously through some successful hunts, or at least find out I'm not the only one on the way to the grocery store for meat.

Hit the first doe I saw Sat AM 9ish. 1 shot low chest through a lung. she hopped the small stream sluggishly but looked like she was going to bound so I raised a bit, hit both lungs and heart.

The field dressing went well. Got all the guts out without puncturing anything. it wasn't a neat and precise job, but it was sufficient.

Saw a bunch of Does Sat PM and Sun AM but was waiting for a chance at a buck ... of course, as soon as I decided to whack another Doe ... saw nothing the rest of the day.

saw two does sat. morning around 7 never came out of the brush for a good shot, saw another does sunday around 3:45 took about an hour for it to come into range. my trusty rem 1100 left slug gun made her time limited with a double lung shot at around 70 yards. she ran about 150 yards into the woods (just far enough to be a real pain in the but as it was getting dark) and dropped dead in the middle of the dear trail. called the wife and told her to "put on the lard and onions" and gutted her in using the old ford family truckster for light seeing as all my flashlights magicly stopped working. hopefully my wife will fill her tag this week also. good luck to everyone!

Being the gentleman that I am--  I did not shoot a deer Saturday morning as I was thinking of others first. :rotf: :rotf: Saturday afternoon we managed to get three deer and Sunday morning we got the fourth. Couple nice bucks-one button buck and a doe. ;)

We have a total of five hunters in the party on Sat/Sun. A seven pointer was shot on Saturday AM. Other than that, we were not seeing any deer. So, one of the guys did a little walking on Sunday and kicked three does to one of our party. He made a nice running shot on one of them. Five hunters = two deer.

I went out again today with a buddy. I did some stalking and sat in a couple of different stands. Nada. Actually, I did see one deer bounding across a swamp at 0630 at 200+ yards. I didn't take a shot with my revolver, too dark, too far, AND bounding away.

I plan to hunt a full day on Friday and Saturday.

I guess I left a day early. My bro-in-law got his first deer at 4:30 today:

Got a nice 7pt right at last light Sat evening. Amazing how they come out of nowhere - I had about 20 seconds from the time that I first saw him in the tall grass, until he would have gotten to the edge of the woods where he was headed. I made a loud grunt which stopped him before he got to the woods - nice broadside shot from about 75yd - he ran about 20ft before he dropped. Was using a 12ga w/ scope and rifled barrel - hard to miss at that distance.

I shot this guy Sunday from about 15-20 yards with my .270 after watching numerous does go by. Shot him through the heart with a Fusion 130 grain bullet. It left a medium exit wound and the big guy went down, jumped back up, and ran 250 yards before falling over dead.

At least they are easy to track when you shoot 'em through the plumbing.

Oh, and we tried the redneck golf-ball, rope, and truck trick to skin him. We'll be doing that again.

Nice deer everyone. I saw a doe and a small fork sat at about 4pm. Would have taken either of them but they never presented a shot. I tried using my bleat call (the can) to call the buck back and about 40 minutes later I hear something coming through the thick brush. A huge 8 pointer comes up and again I couldn't get a shot off. I was pretty bummed out. Now I'm kicking myself for not maybe trying to push one through the brush but I always try my best to take ethical shots that I know will result in a kill. Oh well, there's always next weekend. My brother got an 8 pointer sat evening.

buddy got a spike Sat. morning, I had a doe sneak up on me but I didn't get off a shot (was handgun hunting and she didn't give me any kind of a shot as she was exiting stage right!). Sun. morning I got a spike and he didn't see anything (I switched stands Sat. afternoon and also switched to the .30-30 since sightlines from that stand are longer than I want to try with the handgun). not as much shooting going on in the area as other years - weather just a little too nice to get the deer moving much I guess! And we only saw one other hunter close to us.

planning to go up again this weekend to maybe add another doe to the freezer.

We ended up with 2 deer, not by my hand however. 7 hunters including 2 father/son teams. Good size animals - very tasty as well.

We had a couple of Timber Wolf (not the basketball dribbling type) sightings in the area, so we think there is a definite correlation to the lack of deer being seen. There has also been rumor that the DNR released at least 2 Cougars within 10 miles of where we hunt – no telling how accurate that is as the DNR don’t even acknowledge Northern Minnesota as part of the Cougar range. I’m more willing to believe the Timber wolf explanation than the Cougar Tale. Who knows for sure?

All I know is I spent 24 hours over 3 days waiting for a deer to shoot and when presented with the opportunity, was outsmarted. 8:43 AM Sunday deer of unknown sex bounds from thicketon the right through shooting lane headed to wider shooting lane through dividing thicket - direction right to left. Gun ready - cross hairs fixed on the edge of the next shooting lane and logical route through area for said deer. Waited, waited, waited.....waited some more.....and waited some more.....I began to think that maybe I'd been double crossed and my quarry had exited out the back of the second thicket.

Just as I raised my head off the cheek rest and brought my eye out of the scope. Out bounds a fork horn buck and in two leaps clears the second lane while I struggle to get the sight picture lined up. Duped and Served a lesson in patience - all that is left of the encounter is my memory of the one that got away.

I have many stories of missed opportunities as I roused from "ahem" deep "ahhh" reverie to the sight of the white flag flying high as the brown eye watches me struggle to get into shooting position - laughing as it follows the white flag to deeper cover away from the funny smelling snoring log that moved.
