My entire point is that the law is arbitrary and that you cannot define poaching without citing the law, unless you use [some] dictionar[ies] definition of taking game on others' property. So condensed we have: How do you take someone's freedom for breaking an arbitrary rule?

And this brings shame on hunters about as much as Nidal Hasan brings shame on doctors.

From the Strib article about the incident:

Reinke has a criminal history in Minnesota for convictions for fifth-degree criminal assault and domestic assault.

Mightn't he already have forfeited his right to own firearms by virtue of a gross misdemeanor domestic assault conviction? The article also states that they are currently checking for evidence the deer might have been taken by firearms.

5th degree domestic is a misdemeanor only and it's the lowest form of assault you can get. You can get accused of it from a current or FORMER spouse, co-inhabitant or child.

Just a woman saying you caused fear is enough for you to:

Be arrested and charged
Loose your gun rights
Loose your right to a MCPPA permit
Have an OFP placed against you.
be considered one who is ineligible to possess handguns/assault weapons. Stretch to include ALL firearms AND ammunition.

Mind you, this is without having even SET foot in court yet to face your accuser, have a right to a jury trial or even a speedy trial.

article on MPR last week.
Shades of Grey

Couple others on domestic related.
Parental Alienation

Civil Rights Roll back since Jim Rowe

I see this guy as a scum bag in his own with the poaching that is being charged. It's likely he thinks he is seriously above the law on a lot of things. His public record shows him the scum he is. Fishing / extra lines, (2)-Domestic assault (NOT 5th degree). disorderly (fighting / brawling) drug possess, theft of gas.

So it's not the first time he's had serious run ins with the law or been busted for poaching.

Yop, you can get a lot of information off the internet. Especially public records IF you know where to look for it. WHAT you do with that information is another story.

Point of clarification; The quote in my post is "5th degree assault and domestic assault", two separate offenses, and the domestic was convicted as a gross misdemeanor and involved a little time in the pokey. IIRC possible justification for loss of gun rights.

Hmmm wow, a MPR spot that actually understands the difference between a pattern of activity and bad response to a single situation.

further than that, I think the pattern of low life fringe activity is probably why the DNR went sniffing with the hounds. a single got caught without his license warning would not bring on this sort of investigation. They smelled this one from a long way off, and had this one slipped past, the monetary gain this sludge would have gotten could have been HUGE. I had heard that he had a $250,000 exclusive story deal with one of the big TV shows/magazines, pending sign off by the DNR. The guy who shot the huge non typical buck here last month said someting about huge money for the rights. So if nothing else, I hope that he lost the chance to make so much dough will hurt the longest....

they don't consider them a "million Dollar buck" for a reason.

Considering the draw it will bring to MN for Trophy hunters, the NR hunter population will explode in that county know that that monster was there and breeding. Good genes are still there for more potential monsters.

Looks like he's gonna pay pretty dearly for this screw-up.

Hunter accused of poaching trophy buck gets jail time in plea deal
Reinke's sentence calls for him to serve 245 days in jail. He also loses his hunting privileges for five years, and must pay $1,500 in restitution and $500 in court costs.

Not at the Sportshow.

The guy plead out on March 18 which means he has 30 days to appeal the confiscation. He wouldn't win any appeal, but under the law the DNR still can't do anything with it until the time expires.

They have been offered a substantial sum by Cabela's for the mount. They are trying to decide what to do. They would really like the money, but they also don't want to play into the "paying for trophies" mentality.

I'm hoping they don't sell it. There is quite a bit of interest in seeing it and it could really help fill up those TIP jars.

nice way to get some serious change.

Put it up on a moving van, send it around to all of the Ganders/cabelas/outdoor chains. It would be a draw for any of them.

Wonder how many would actually pay for what should have been a public animal.
