Yeah castrating after killing would do precisely nothing for meat quality. THey need to be raised "fixed" or else they'll be more tough and I'll be nice and call it "gamey". If you read about a boar's mating habits, you'll understand why. I won't go into detail here. Suffice to say, they undergo a lot of strain and high tension, and this carries into the meat characteristics.

Females (like in deer also) give you the best chance of good meat, then a castrated male. Now this is different than market hogs, and a wild boar lives a much different life than a market hog. So I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule.

Ron, would you like to maybe link or give some info on how you found your hunt? I have checked into a couple Texas hunts, but I seems the best success possibility may be in the deep south east, like the Carolina's or Florida.

I would think the quality of their food diet would have more to do with the taste or texture of the meat compared to their plumbing.

My son was working in Texas and hooked up with a rancher who also had a high fence property where he had exotics and we ended up hunting his property a number of times and becoming friends. Maybe Mike can post how he found spots, he would just call me when he had a spot and I would head down there.

I have been thinking about this, From what I have read about the ranch has all been positive.
These guys seem to like it and keep going back. Leaving Mn in feb to hunt in shorts and a tshirt sounds good.

Appears to be real hunting........sit in a blind over a feeder.............and shoot a pig.......
you could save lots of money and go to Lunds or Cub....
cobb, I've hunted boar (not feral pigs) in Tennessee, Arizona, and Carolina...there you have to hunt, call, hunt, track....
mostly pistol and shotgun, rare occasion for rifles..........
and some folks have been known to get lost, some even got hurt.........!

Call?

I assume using the same type call that you would use for fox or coyote?

The feral hogs will take advantage of what ever they can, including a dying rabbit. So when calling a hog, you used a varmint call?

I hunted on one ranch at night, this hunt we walked around checking out the feed troughs until we spotted a group. The rancher turned on the spot light to pick one out and shut it off until I was ready. He turned the light back on and I took the shot. It was fun but not my preferred method.

The next one with a different rancher we sat in a elevated stand over a feeder that was timed for 7:00am. Again not my preferred method, I spooked them when they were coming in and did not get a shot.

We hunted a number of times with this rancher and he was comfortable with us to go find them, which he usually doesn't do. His property is over 100 acres of high fence and by the end of the day your glad they are within the fence. He has exotics and the hogs eat the feed he puts out, the feed may be why we haven't had any bad meat. There is rolling hills, creek, woods and open area's, it's not like you can just walk up on them. Until I hunted here I didn't think I would like hunting under these conditions. He has some other property that's not fenced along one of the rivers and he invited us back during harvesting. As the combine is cutting the field they come out of the woods and there is some high ground to set up on to glass for them and take longer shots. This one I do want to do someday.

The pig squealing call will work most often and in its variations is intended to mimic the screams of a young hog in distress, that will bring adult hogs running, as they tend to protect their young. Another, is a caller that seems imitate the sounds of fighting boars, which other boars will readily respond to. Refrain from using grunters, as these are popular, but usually sound more like the warning or panic sounds that they make when threatened. When in doubt some of the new electronic calls seem to work fairly well, at least they are more consistent, because like most things including shooting and self-defense most people don't practice.

Warning: you do have to be real careful making distressed pig calls when you are in big cat country. About 10 years ago in AZ, a friend and I were outside of Globe, AZ calling Javelin and Coyotes, and he got jumped by a cat......he survived but it took well over 500 stitches to put him back together again.......always carry a hand gun and a big effen knife when calling!

Two example of "Ranches" or hunting farms. This seems to be quickly becoming the only way to hunt anymore. However, there are places in these kinds of areas where land-owners will let you hunt, but you need to know someone, just like here.............

You have to decide what type of hunt you want and research from there.

I really do to intend to dissuade anyone from hunting
or trying any type of hunting that they are familiar or comfortable with.........
as an individual you have to do what you want and need to do..........

Just like J Allen......would I like to spear hunt an elk, yes.....would I like to do it in a pen, NFW.......

No, haven't tried it, and don't intend to either. Dogs are good for birds.
I have seen too many dogs shredded hunting boars and cats to ever want to put a dog through that.......
