Actually, as a MN native, I had never heard it called soda until I went to college, where I met some goofy cheesehead immigrants. You know, the type who call scuttlebuts bubblers.

Huh, I grew up in eastern cheeseland and got laughed at first time I called it a bubbler at UMD but we always called it pop growing up.

Well what the hell else would you call those things attached to the wall that give you water when you push the button??? Bubbler is the only logical name for those things!

I'm pretty sure Soda comes from the south, as when I was knee high to a june bug, a waitress at a Denny's in Tennesee asked me if I wanted a soda, and I thought she was talking about the stuff you use to remove stains or pull your own pop with flavor syrups, and was disgusted by the thought.

She knew what I meant, though, when I asked for a Coke.

Coke! Sitting in a restaraunt in Charleston and the waitress asks if I want something to drink. "Coke" ... "what kind?" :?: COKE!
Tea? Sweetened or un?

Oh, um, to the topic I'll not be there.

Soda is a drink, pop is a noise. Get over it.

All this coming from the bassackwards folk that think "Duck Duck Gray-Duck" is acceptable and Ketchup is a spice.

The Clout around here is draining at an alarming level..... You are all just lucky I'm here to help you keep up.

I stand by my claim that the terminology originated EAST of the Mississippi.

Actually, the terms are almost interchangeable in the land of the cheddarheads. However, on the east coast, they look at you funny when you ask for a pop - out there, it's definitely soda.

Funnily enough, I have asked a squid by what name they refer to bubblers - he/she/it seemed to take offense as he/she/it turned & swam away, leaving behind a cloud of ink...

Well, do they make a bubbling sound when you turn them on? If so....... Bubbler. If not....... Water fountain.

No reason to complicate things.

Reminds me of the first week I spent in MN as a transplant from WI........ I asked someone where the nearest Tyme machine was...... They nearly called the people in the white coats.
