Im thinking about repolishing it, but I dont want to mess up th etching of "Smith & Wesson" and "44 Magnum" on the side of the barrel.

You should be able to polish this without disturbing the lettering, I would recommend OUATOR. It's pronounced water and made here in Minnesoto. You can do this by hand and there won't be any danger of removing any metal or snagging any part of your firearm on a wheel during polishing.
