Who Wants Kydex??

Holsters, lights, or any kind of accessory

If they'll cut it up in quarters so I can throw it in the back of a station wagon, or if I can figure out a way to cut it up in the parking lot, or tie it on a roof rack, I can pick it up any morning. And I can pay up front as long as I get reimbursed before my mortgage payment is due on the 9th.

I put a call in to Cope and they're checking on what a single sheet of .090 would cost.

I would be very interested in the response to this...... If they can get more than one sheet I would bet it wouldn't take much to talk the rest of the folks into getting thicker stuff....... Better for holsters anyways.

Please keep us informed!

I'd been mulling over the idea of playing with it anyway, so I'm fine with doing the group buy thing. Right now I just asked what the minimum quantity they have is and how much. Once we determine how good their price is, we can go from there.

I had project ideas for .125'' and thicker, preferably .250''. Once I saw the prices, my project ideas rapidly changed.

Well duh. .250 is a far cry from .090.

Who did you get prices from?

Once you pass a given threshold for thickness, the plastic cannot be extruded anymore and needs to be cast. That process change adds a big chunk to the price per piece.

nowhere necessarily reputable or "a good place to buy", finally was able to find a website with an automated price list. A full sheet of .250 was somewhere around $500. Nothing to compare that to so I don't know for sure.

All the "good" places to buy plastic stopped selling drops to the public about 15 years ago. It was a lot easier to find a chunk of whatever back when I was in HS than it was even 10 years ago. Cadillac plastic used to have a whole wall of stock that was dirt cheap - someone decided that was a waste of time and eliminated it.

.25" kydex sounds esoteric. I'd imagine anything needing that kind of cross section would be injection molded rather than cut from sheet due to the deformation/thinning at the bends.

If you don't mind my asking, what did you want it for? The reason I ask is that there's probably some other plastic that might fit the bill a bit more economically. The guys at Cope were good with me when I was looking for a specific reinforced nylon with lubricity. They tried to find alternatives that were more cost effective, but within the same class of material I had discovered online.

I don't mind at all, its no huge secret. This is a creation I came up with after seeing how much some companies charge for roughly the same darn thing. I used what I think is lexan or plexi-glass which was available to me at the time. It works fine, only the vertical portion of the bracket is just a bit on the flimsy side. Something thicker/more rigid would allow for a more positive draw is all.

Keeps the gun secure and somewhat hidden. Also for me when I am half awake, if I fumble around the gun doesn't move until I have a good grip on it, as opposed to having it loose on the nightstand where I might knock it on the floor, etc. I have no doubt there is some material out there that is perfect, I just don't know what it is.

What is the preferable thickness for holster makeing?

For holster layout is 1X4 better then 2X2?

Are there any plans for a second sheet? If so I would be interested in 4sq ft

Any plans for holster makeing get together?

Awful lot of questions being late.

should check out http://www.rmholsters.com

He makes one of those out of kydex also. Just he bends the part for the bed the opposite direction. He uses 1/8" material. I have a holster, couple mag pouches and flashlight holders from him.

I had checked his out, and his gets strength from having curves in the material where mine doesn't.

Mine cost $15 (just the holster really) and his cost $50, but pretty soon I'll be into it that much with my stupid experimenting. Gives me a project though, which is never a bad thing. At least mine is adjustable in the sense of flipping it over, or drilling new holes. It gets about a 95% from me, just a bit flimsy on the draw.
