Non-Res FL permit stuff

Postby Fiery Red XIII on Fri Oct 26, 2007 12:11 pm

For all you with non-res FL permits, what extra Cert does the instructor need for you to get it? (JT was my Instructor @ Bill's North by the way). If I need more, can I get it from any of you instructors ASAP? If so, how much $? How long did it take to get the forms? How long did it take to get the permit? I requested forms from FL over a week ago by mail, would it be better to call? If they deny the permit, do you get any of the fee back? Or is that an application fee? Looking to get it for a late Feb/early March trip...is that possible? Also, do I need a check? or can I pay w/a CC?

There are a number of ways to "prove" that you had the required FL training. The two most common are (1) simply sending a copy of your DD214 if you are ex-military; or (2) providing certification from an instructor or class approved by FL; typically any NRA class counts, or any class taught by an NRA instructor. In my case, when I do the MN Permit class, my certificate lists my NRA # so that FL will accept it w/o question.

Your permit will take 30-90 days...with most coming in the 45-75 day window.

Thanks Paul, I'll check before your next class...are most LEO instructors NRA certified do you know? I'll also check w/Bill's North next week.

I have no data, but my best guess is that "most" LEO instructors are not NRA certified.

Copy that...can I sign up for your class w/o paying (edit: meant as in paying up-front)? Or get refunded if I cancel next week? My MN permit is good through 2011, but never realized all the other stuff before I took that class. Thank you so much!

Signing up is as simple as saying "Hey, I hope to be there."

Cancelling is as simple as saying "Oops...can't make it after all."

No other pre-registration is needed.

Edited to add that it is best to send e-mail with the indication of attending...that way I can keep a list "in case" something happens, and to be absolutely certain that enough materials are brought to the class.

If you have a signed DNR Firearms Safety Certificate, that's good enough for Florida.

Edit to add: I believe the fee is non-refundable. They claim to have the permit within 90 days. Mine, in '03, took 114 days due to a problem with the fingerprint card - someone stuffed the returned document in a drawer and forgot about it.

Here's the list of valid Florida training:

* Any DNR hunter safety class from any state
* Any NRA gun class
* Any gun class taught by an NRA instructor
* Any law enforcement or security guard gun class
You can also qualify by providing "evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service," so a DD-214 or IPSC membership card fits the bill.

Then, all it takes is fingerprints, passport-style photos, and a completed, notarized application, and $117. Here's the Florida "How to Apply" page: http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/weapons/apply.html

The statute is here:
http://www.flsenate.gov/Statutes/index. ... 06#0790.06
...(h) Demonstrates competence with a firearm by any one of the following:

1. Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or a similar agency of another state;

2. Completion of any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;

3. Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services;

4. Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;

5. Presents evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service;

6. Is licensed or has been licensed to carry a firearm in this state or a county or municipality of this state, unless such license has been revoked for cause; or

7. Completion of any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association certified firearms instructor;

Florida recognizes training provided by AACFI certified instructors.

And any NRA instructor...any class...and almost any other firearms instructor program that exists anywhere. If you are an NRA instructor and also a MN Permit to Carry instructor, just add your NRA Inst# to the certificate...FL then has no issue...no questions...your class is acceptable. They (the FL officials) will be happy to send you a box of application packets...just bring them to your MN classes and have them available for anyone that wishes to take one.

On an unrelated matter, Utah is really getting a handle on their applications...they are "almost" within their own 60 day time frame now.
