Appleseed primer

Postby DeanC on Mon Feb 15, 2010 10:05 am

You don't have to be top notch to shoot an Appleseed. That isn't the point of these clinics. The point is to learn. 90+% of participants do not earn the Rifleman patch at any given event. Those who do earn it are usually repeat participants.

If you want to get a head start on an Appleseed, watch this video:

This is just an excerpt. The whole video can be seen here: http://www.archive.org/details/Rifle_Ma ... fle_Part_1

wow, things have changed.

I have a collection of articles from Richard Frantz from '97, "The basic shooting instructions" series. It's been incorporated into the NRA's Basic Firearms instruction courses.

In the army, we were actually teaching them to be straight behind the rifle now, not at 30 degrees. The guys I learned from were national competitors at Camp Perry. All of them EIC badge holders.

It's so true though about creating the triangles with bone and not muscle for solid positions.

You could read up on it, too...

Skip around a bit, there are parts that aren't vital for something like Appleseed.

Speaking of Appleseed - what time of day does the training end? The flyer says that shooting starts at 8:30 AM, but no mention of an ending time. I'm an hours drive from Elk River. Trying to decide if I can plan anything else that evening.

Also interested in hearing from someone that's been to one whether it's worth hanging around Saturday evening after the instruction is over to learn from the other participants in an informal setting. What's been your experience?

Somewhere I saw that it is 4pm.

My wife and me just signed up for Elk River in April. I am shopping for stuff now.

One thing I can't figure out is slings. I have seen the GI canvas slings - they have the big metal hook on one end. What are the nylon ones people talk about? Will these work? http://estore.websitepros.com/832529/Detail.bok?no=215

These work decent. I like my cotton one better, but they can be hard to find. The USGI slings are 1.25" so you need to check your swivels.

Speaking of which... Anyone know where I can find 1.25" sling swivels? I need a couple for my 22...

I also need to know how to attach a USGI sling to an AR that looks like this:

There is a built-in swivel under the front site base, but how do I attach to the stock? This is only necessary when standing, but I'd like to at least have the option to shoot a few rounds with it at any future Appleseeds I attend...

Thanks!

Looks like you've got an attachment point for a swivel under your battery compartment. Or you could put a half twist in the sling and attach it though your loop in the top of the stock.

With my telestock, I like to have my sling oriented perpendicular to the butt, and as close to my shoulder as possible.

It really depends.

Last year at Elk River there were still people shooting after 6pm. But we also had a mixup with target placement and had to burn some time re-setting all 40 targets earlier in the day.

Wow, TY, I thought it was just a local deal.

I've spent the last 20yrs going to Fur Trade era Rendezvous honing my shooting skills, I'm like a new kid with this CF stuff again.
