Colt .22 and Hi-Point 9mm carbines

Postby mlmmitchell07 on Mon Feb 15, 2010 4:20 pm

Hello fellow gun lovers and supporters. I am getting interested in the AR style carbines for target and maybe even competition down the road. I wanted to get a relatively inexpensive model to start so I can practice with low cost ammo and then move up to bigger and better down the line. I have been doing a lot of reading online and have come across the Colt-Umarex M4 style carbine which looks promising and would be a good starter for me. I have also read about a Hi-Point 9mm carbine that also appears to be a good starter. Has anyone seen, used, have an opinion on these carbines, and does anyone know were I can look at them and possibly buy? Thanks in advance as always.

My recommendation is to look into one a few things.

An AR15 trainer (AirSoft, our own Westberg sells them through http://www.unholstered.com) a .22 AR replica (there are a few makers out there, S&W and Colt you referenced come to mind) or lastly, get an AR lower, and a dedicated .22 upper.

If you are looking to get proficient with an AR, it seems like you would be ahead of the game by learning on the same platform. With the Airsoft or .22 the cost of ammunition is minimal in comparison to 9mm. If you go the route of a dedicated .22 upper on an AR lower, you will be half way to your complete AR when ready........ and you will have the option to swap them out for practice/competition as needed.

My .02,

the hi-point carbine is a fun little plinker but I think it is just that ,a plinker. I agree with Strad (medic) in that it may be beneficial to learn the manual of arms of the system that you intend to eventually work up to. Now saying all that, the difference between a S&W/colt/Sig/Ruger or whoever dedicated 22lr A4 style gun is minimal from one of the lower priced(doesn't mean crappy cheap one) regular A4's. Why not just spend the extra hundred or so bucks and get the real deal. you will then be shooting something that weighs the same, shoots the same, feels the same, sounds the same, and if you want to move to bigger and better you will probably be able to offload the cheapy for more than a 22lr version to help fund your new one.
As I was.

Also look at the Sig Sauer 522 LR.

Not really an AR look-alike but made a lot better than the other 22 AR's out there. Also, costs the same as a SW 22 AR. Note, the trigger on the Sig Sauer 522 LR is a two stage and fairly heavy and long. I have seen prices from $400 to $450 for the Sig Sauer 522 LR.

Mine shoots really well. Glad I waited versus the SW or Colt.
Because I care, I carry.

For what it's worth, the Smith and Wesson MP22 has a manual of arms much more similar to a real AR-15 than the Colt/Umarex does.

Plus the mags will fit in standard AR-15 pouches.

I've got a CMMG drop in conversion kit, and while I like it a lot, I think you'd get more training mileage out of something like the Smith, where you can practice mag changes and stuff.

Thanks for the information fellow firearm enthusiasts. I will be checking out a few firearms and see how they feel and then see if I can test some out at Bills'. I have time since I do not plan on a purchase for 5-6 months.

I handled a used High Point carbine today at Lincoln Pawn (85th and Central) I think it was in the $250 range.

I was not impressed with the LOP...It seemed really short to me and uncomfortable.

Interesting double ring sights. Would take some getting used to.

Could be a fun gun to shoot but not worth it to me to own one...

I believe Jerry at the Carry Depot had them for less than 200 (NIB) last time I checked.

If you can get one of the newer models, do that over the old stock style as well. More comfortable to shoot and easier to accesorize if you go that route at all.
