What .22 to buy?

Postby Lil' Dog on Wed Mar 03, 2010 9:19 pm

I was thinking about adding a new .22 LR to the collection, and I had asked about the Weatherby XXII, and a CZ 453, in some earlier posts.
The Weatherby is nice, and CZ is is also nice, at half the price. The Weatherby is probably too rich for my blood, and I am not so sure about the CZ. A number of you had mention Savage. I own three diferent Savages already, so I am familier with them. I have a 17 HMR, and it is a true tack driver. My question is, Does any have one of those new models with the twisted fluted barrels, and those unique lamanated stocks that every gun dealer seem to have on their shelves? I am curious to how well they shoot, and if the barrel is more of a gimmick, or if the fluting serves a pupose.

I have a CZ452 which I really like, and do recommend. I've had several of the newer savages and was not impressed. They all seem to form a burr on the bottom of the bolt where they engage with the trigger/sear whatever. You can even pull the bolt out of a brand new Savage rimfire and see it already has a burr. rimfirecentral.com is the place to look for advice.

Whatever you do, don't waist your money on a 10/22, they are crap, complete crap!

Cabelas has, as of 20 mins ago anyway, a nice 52B winchester with a very heavy target barrel. If you are looking for accuracy might be something to check out.

I have not shot those newest savages with the twisted barrel (have not seen them in stores yet, would think it might be 6 mo or so before one could even get their hands on one), but I do have its predacessor the Mark II BVTS which is a very comfortable (for me anyways) thumbhole stock, heavy barrel, and the accu-trigger. Have not had mine to the range yet but have fired it in the 17 hmr model and found that very accurate. Outdoor life did a run down of some .22s not that long ago and this one came out on top both in value and accuracy beating out the Anshutz model they were testing at the time. Put a Nikon 3-9 on mine and hope to spend sometime at the range fine tuning this set up in the near future.

I had a Remington Nylon 66 as a kid. It was a great rifle and never jammed. I bet the better part of 200,000 rounds through that gun - no kidding. Though long out of production, they can usually be found in the used long gun racks at Cabelas.

I have one of the 10/22's with a laminated stock, and the twist fluted bull barrel. It is very accurate, not as good as my anchutz but hey you have to be realistic. I would not hesitate to buy another, I bought mine 5-6 years ago.

I don't like people attributing comments, especially negative ones, to me with fake quotes.

I am not your friend. I have never met you. We are not buddies. We don't have some special connection where I think your stupid comments are funny.

So, to be perfectly clear, please, in the future, refrain from posting stupid stuff and then putting my name on it.

And, FWIW, I got the same impression of you in terms of being wound up tight, as you apparently cannot handle the fact that someone else doesn't think buying a 150 dollar 22 and dropping a ton of money into it to make it shoot almost as good as a 500 dollar 22 is the pinnacle of small-bore shooting.

Like I said before, spend all you want on your precious 10/22, it just isn't my cup of tea.

If you go to therapy, you might be better at dealing with the fact that not everyone agrees with your opinion that tricking out a 150 dollar 22 is the best thing to ever happen to small-bore shooting. Then you can stop projecting red herrings in order to justify your expensive 10/22.

If they were $150 that might a *little* more excusable. As it is, you can't touch one for under $200 these days. And they are full of plastic and have painted receivers inside and out.

Yup, imagine my surprise the first time I broke the 10/22 down after its maiden voyage to the range. There were flakes of black paint all over the place and I almost messed myself until I realized what it was. Its almost like Ruger is making 10/22's as cheap as they can, knowing full well that people will (more likely have to ) modifty them with aftermarket parts to be happy with them.

If I had a 10/22 from 15 years ago I'd likely be much happier. As it is, mine needed new parts right out of the box, just to function 100%. It was brand new. I didn't know this when I bought it, but I'd probably buy a different .22 if I was to do it again. Happy with mine as it is now though.

If those jackasses at Ruger had any marketing sense at all, they would sell stripped 10/22 receivers.
