GLOCK GEN 4

Postby RyanTV on Thu Mar 11, 2010 3:56 pm

I am itching to get a Glock Gen 4 andf I was wondering if anyone had heard about any problems with the new recoil spring or the pos./neg. of the new style mag. release. Any info or feedback would be great.

From what I have read in a number of articles it sounds like the adjustable backstrap system is less than perfect.

The 3 grip sizes are nice and the grip texture is very good.

I have one, it shoots fine and holds fine. realistically i dont notice much of a difference from the previous gen 22 whilst shooting unless i really try to notice it. Now for the bad, it does not like anything less than good proper 40 loads and requires a firm grip. It is very easy to induce a FTE in this gun. I believe that a slightly lower power recoil spring would fix this however. As for the backstraps, i believe them to be a fantastic solution to a non existent problem.

Most comprehensive reviews I've read say that the issue with FTEs and failure to lock open on an empty mag when using lighter .40 loads or the G17 go away after about 500 rounds.

Not much difference in recoil? I thought their idea with the new spring was to significantly reduce recoil.

Most of what I have to say was posted in my review on the link Bessy left here.

But overall it's a nice gun, great shooter, and rather picky. Weak 9mm ammunition isn't going to cycle the gun and any amount of limp wristing is going to cause failures to feed. The back strap system needs some refinement. Getting the back strap attachments on the gun and pinned can be a real chore and the tool Glock includes is beyond worthless for the task.

Since you asked about the new style magazines I'll give a brief on that. They function just as good as previous magazines. The new ones will work in all older generation Glocks but if you swap the magazine release around on the generation four Glock old magazines won't work. The magazines have a cut out for ambidextrous magazine release equipped guns which is irrelevant here since Glock only release one gun in America with an ambi-release and that was the 21SF. The way the new cut outs are placed in the magazines I must say they certainly look hacked together (Bot the cut out for the left had magazine release notch and the ambi-notch expose metal instead of plastic like the original cut out has). The new magazines feed flawlessly though and drop free without a hitch. I really like the larger release button as well. Also the gun comes with three magazines which I think should become the new defacto standard for all guns.

Another thing to note is Glock appears to have completely done away with staked on front sights. The front sight on new Glocks including all (As far as I know) generation four models are screwed on (They've actually been doing this for a while now but it's something to note as the staked on front sight has always been a gripe).

Minus the barrel, recoil spring, and magazine release all older parts should be compatible. All trigger related parts minus the trigger mechanism housing are the same ones used in previous Glock models. This is a nice book for those with spare parts lying around.

Overall I like the gun but I really feel the back strap system needs refinement.

I agree with the pins for the backstraps. They are plastic and bend easily. I had a tough time lining up
a backstrap well enough to slide the pin in. I imagine I should have used the tool to get the holes lined up first.
But the rest of the changes are nice.
