What else do I need?

Postby benny on Sat Apr 17, 2010 9:35 pm

Ok, I have an older RCBS JR2 with nothing but the reloader it's self.
So far I add a few sets of dies like .243,.38/.357,.30-06 and a couple others, I have a small hand held case trimmer deburring tool and a reloading book.

What else will I need to complete this set up? I see shell holders advertised in Cabela's and I assume I need a few to hold the case in place, but how many different ones do I need?
There was a feature for priming on the JR but all that is left is the lower rod that rotates up into the ram area. The pictures I seen on Ebay of other JR's is that piece isn't complete either, looks to be missing a little round cap on it.

Should I just buy a kit or finish building this set up?

I do have all the stuff for reloading shotshell (Mec 9000G) and have been loading with that set up for many years, so reloading isn't new to me just not metalic reloading,

You need:

Lee Perfect Powder measure
Lee Autoprimer
digital caliper
beam scale - NOT a cheap electronic one!!
kinetic bullet puller
1 shellholder will take 243 and 30-06, other will take 357
wooden loading block for 50 cartridges

that's about it, but I would buy a second manual from a different company just for the extra info.

Pretty much what Sam said, except that the stuff doesn't necessarily need to come from Lee. A dial caliper rather than digital will work fine also If you're comfortable reading it. The reloading manuals from most of the bullet companies have loading how-to sections that you should read b4 you start. Reading 2 will be better. I like the Speer manual best for this, but Hornady, Sierra, Nosler, etc are fine too, so you can just buy the one from the bullet manufacturer you think that you will use most. Most powder companies put out reloading data for free from their websites or you can get their books cheap. They don't have the how-to section or the mini articles for each cartridge, but are a good source of load data to add to that from your manuals.

Bucktail indeed has nailed it as far as the proper way to get into handloading:
