A manhunt is under way in St. Paul after a Maplewood police officer was shot and killed this morning near Lake Phalen.

Police from several agencies are involved in the search for at least one suspect following the shooting which occurred around 7 a.m., said Paul Schnell, a St. Paul Police Department spokesman.

Authorities are using canine dogs and helicopters as they search for the suspect in an area near English Street and Arlington Avenue on the east side of Lake Phalen, just south of the St. Paul-Maplewood border.

Police have set up a large perimeter in the area as they search for the suspect or suspects. They also are looking for a black SUV, a 2005 GMC Envoy, according to chatter on a police scanner.

Some streets in the area of the shooting have been blocked off.

Police will hold a press briefing this morning to give more details about the incident.

You've got to be kidding me. I just walked by that lake last night. Prayers for the family of the slain officer. I hope they get the guy, and soon.

An officer said over his radio about 10:30 a.m. that he'd been hit and had shot one of the suspects. The officer was "injured, but not down," a dispatcher said.

Witnesses said the suspect was killed and that officers continued searching for a second suspect.

I wish they'd light these guys up instead of putting them in cushy prison.

Oh come on, Minnesota prisons aren't cushy. The one I work at is more Holiday Inn than The Hilton. I mean, we only have PlayStation 2's in the rec area. For crying out loud, the PlayStation 3 came out two years ago!

The inhumanity.

And the dirtbag will be treated like royalty by the resident population...

It's hardly "justice."

My prayers are with the officer's family.

Behold dirtbag #1:

Fortunately this scumbag met his just fate at the end of a police officer's gun. Not surprisingly, he served time in prison for aggravated armed robbery. He was given supervised release on 3/15/2010 and quickly violated the terms of his parole, thereby becoming a fugitive.

My question to the apologists who insist on letting scum like this back on the streets.....

Why was someone who was convicted in a double-shooting back on the streets less than THREE YEARS after he was convicted? I know, part of the problem is prosecuters who allow weapons charges to be plea bargained out, but "supervised release" after 27 months for aggravated assault and robbery where two victims were shot is unacceptable. Especially when the convict was a perpetrator of a violent crime. There is something drastically wrong with our criminal justice system, and I fear that until our elected officials develop the cojones to properly fix the problem, it's not going to get any better.
