Shops other than Gunstop

Postby revluke on Fri May 07, 2010 10:35 am

So, Gunstop treats you rudely and you don't want to give them business. (must be family thing, my dad had the same experience) Where are you spending your money for reloading supplies? I should clarify, this was just the guy on the reloading side. The gun side guys were great... I love to keep it local, but I'm not paying someone to call me an idiot if I don't want to drop $600 on a progressive press...

Well, John is not one to mince words and be polite over being safe and he gets all levels of experience in his shop. It's a lot like Seismic Sam. Reading one of his more terse rants, you'd think he was an opinionated jerk... Knowledgeable but to be cautiously introduced in polite society. Get to know him and you'd realize you're mostly right except he's plain spoken and terse because this crap can get someone killed.

Same with John.

The good side is that if you tell him something that is unsafe he WILL tell you.

If he thinks it's going to be unsafe or what you're saying leads him to believe you've skipped a step or don't know what you're doing, he will stop you and ask questions.
He's literally a treasure trove of information.

But he's not a hand holder and smooth talker.

I've never been to Bullseye Shooters' Supply in Lake Elmo.

There's Wolf's Den in Hugo and AmmoCraft in ?Hopkins?

What is with this GunStop bashing lately? I have never had a bad experiance there. Maybe we have some folks here who do not know how to interact with other people effectively.

Many people on this site offer firearm training... I think I am going to start offering a class on how to deal with people. 2 hours at $75 per person and it will be good for your MN permit to interact with others other wise known as your sandbox permit.

Most excellent idea! Sometimes it is the customer versus the shop staff that is the problem.....

Who at gunstop said that? I can only think of one person, and would be surprised if he's allowed to talk to the customers at all. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience there, I won't shop anywhee else.

For alternatives, you can shop at gander mountain or cabelas (both carry reloading equipment, and are horribly over priced) but you won't find the experience or expertise you will find at gunstop. You can also shop at the wolfs den. I don't know anything about their prices or knowledge. Eventually all roads lead to the gunstop.

And Holland ^2............ +1.

Agreed. Take off your kid mittens, think man-room before P/C and namsey pansey was the norm; now welcome to GunStop.

Yes, I'm very curious as to what made John use a term like 'idiot'. Generally he can be a bit short with people who come for so-called advice but have their minds full of pre-set notions of what they want.

I wouldn't discount John's advice at all. He's "been there, done that" for just about everything in the reloading world. If he calls you an idiot, he's most likely trying to save you money and some frustration. If he sells you what ever crackpot idea you think is brilliant but isn't you won't be comming back. If he get's you set up right you'll be a customer for life.

Jon might say something like "Don't be an idiot and spend money you don't need to" and not be calling you an idiot. IF you show up and tell him how to reload and what he needs to carry to make you happy, yeah, I can see him getting terse. Otherwise, I have a hard time believing it was said.

The Man has singlehandedly been carrying the TC reloading market for over 30 years. He has an immense amount of patience, but he does have a fairly defined BS meter.

Maybe it was the suit I was wearing since I'd just done a funeral at Fort Snelling. And thanks for assuming I'm a bad customer whoever said that. Actually, kinda funny. In my line of work, we call those folks EGR's. Extra Grace Required. I'm not that guy. Either way, I couldn't even get to the point of asking what I would need to get started, he just didn't seem to have time. No worries, I'll just give another shop a try...

You will be missed, I'm sure. I'll be frank and say that I have a hard time believing we are getting the whole story out of you.

He can be a little rough if you don't know him or vice versa. He usually comes around after a few interactions with you. Especially when you spend cash there on his products. It took me a while to get use to his natural direct short scentences, but he is a great guy once he gets to know you.
