Whooz yer daddy?? UPDATE!!

Postby Seismic Sam on Thu May 20, 2010 4:36 pm

Just got a goodie in the mail from Sinclair International. The next generation long range .338 bullet! This sucker is THE future in long range .338 shooting with either the .338 Remington Ultramag or the .338 Lapua.

I can't condense this stuff down any better than Berger did, so here's the scoop, and we are talking TRUE innovation here.

And here's the goodies in my mailbox:

The disclaimer about hunting effectiveness is somewhat funny, as if you surf the 'net you will see some pretty nasty wound shots on deer and the like with Matchking bullets. Bottom line: These kind of bullets just come completely apart when they hit, and if you want to eat what you shot, it reduces the amount of available steak substantially. Unless you're a cannibal from Papua New Guinea, it's a non-issue with human targets.

The bullet is 1/10th inch longer, which is pretty much irrelevant with bore seating your bullets. The shoulder is pretty much in the same place, so you want to re-do your bore seating calculation, but it's unlikely to be an issue. And as the Berger facts state, the exact bore seting distance is not an issue with this bullet. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!

Despite the labeling on the box, the BC at 2750 FPS is a staggering .933!! The BC on a normal 50 cal HPBT is a paltry .670, and on the Hornady 50 cal A-Max it's 1.05.

The closeup of the nose is significant. While Sierra Matchking bullets are damn good, the assymetrical point on the bullet, which is an artifact of the jacket swaging process, will hurt you when this thing is spinning at 130,00 RPM and the nose is generating a bunch of parisitic drag. The Berger bullets have much more uniform noses, and that will help at very long ranges.

So: Gonna wash the wax off the surface, get these bullets mechanically moly plated, and go to the range!! If or when the Obamacare Alte Volks Einsatzgruppen show up within a mile of my house, it will be a bad day for the home team.

Unfortunately, JP no longer does ANY bolt gun work at all. Best you can do COMMERCIALLY is the Savage 110BA in .338 Lapua, and the brass is $2.75 a round.

With your connections, however, I'm sure you could "get something" from Fort Benning for "evaluation purposes"...

You can even use my benchrest sizing and seating dies...

Excuse my ignorance:

Why moly plate them? And how is this done mechanically?

just curious

Neither my .338 or my AR-10 have EVER had a copper bullet run down the bore. It's been 100% moly from Day 1. Helps keep down the fouling, and is also a lubricant..

Plating them is quite easy, and involves a clean, empty 18oz peanut butter jar. Add just a speck of moly powder, put jar into vibratory tumbler, and 5 - 6 hours later the bullets rattling together have hammered down a nice, even layer of moly.

If you want an even better coating I understand hexagonal boron nitride is what David Tubb uses.

I could go as low as 2600 for the base gun. Brake and bipod are extra (normally 500 and 240 for these).. take all three for an even 3000.

I don't think you'll find it for lower but prove me wrong and I'll match that price.

Thats a great price, I saw big blackie in there a month ago.

I got my TRG 42 1-10, with bipod, brake, 3 ring Sako scope mount ($450), extra mag ($250), 40 rounds Remington Factory ammo($250+ Lapua makes it for them), Mike Lucus bore guide, all NIB, $3200 shipped (it was a private party), best deal I ever saw on a New TRG with 10 twsit barrel, I would say your price comes in as the 2nd best (until you have to pay the damn sales tax on it :( )

Back on topic - I can't wait to get my hands on these! Thanx for the update, I gave up following this awhile back, I wonder if John will take money down on some?

I'm taking her up to the cabin this weekend, there is a tree on the other side of the bay that needs to come down, I don't feel like leaving the cabin to do it :D

I kidd I kidd, proper backstop is even more important when using these guns.

Oddly enough, John-Boy didn't have any the last time I looked, and told me to call Berger directly and bitch. So I called Berger, and they had them IN stock, but minimum order was 5 boxes of 50. Seeing as I just wanted to order 1 box to try them out, I ordered from Sinclair online and they showed up in 4 days flat. As such, I have no idea why they aren't stocked at Gunstop. They are $34.99 in single box quantities, which makes them the same price as the Sierra 300 grain Matchkings.

After surfing the web on the Remington website, I also found out that my Remington 700 Sendero SF in .338 Ultramag is now a collector's item, as they have moved on to the Sendero SF II and the largest caliber available in that is 300 Ultramag. Considering my gun has also had a full JP Custom job which he no longer offers in bolt guns, that makes it even rarer.
