Every now and then, the folks at The Onion show their true colors. This was one such article; they think gun owners are knuckle dragging yokels. That's ok, I think people in the media are jelly-headed hypocrites. We all harbor some stereotypes, I guess.

Satire, and all other attempts at humor, are only funny and truly satirical when directed at someone else.

Well, they guy was partaking of an activity that is legal in every way. He was not prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was at a gun range shooting paper targets. The ridiculous hyperbole used to describe the guy is an obvious slam on everyday reporting<?>by the media. It sounds to me more like they're satirizing both the bed wetting anti gun crowd and the media subset of that crowd. I take no offense at the story. This is a well aimed jab to the gut of all anti's.

You're right --- the guy is shooting at paper targets, not people. So maybe they really are making a point about how the major news media preys on people's fear of guns and gun owners. But the language is deliberately crafted to mimic the narrative of a newspaper report about a murder spree. I guess that's what hit me wrong.

If you guys didn't realize it was satire after the first paragraph, you really need to work at keeping up.

It said "targets" not people or victims.

And the only "agenda" the Onion has is to make fun of people. Everyone is fair game.

Well, it is satire because that is all The Onion does. Who they think they are satirizing is anyone's guess - no doubt they did it badly though...

Yup! I remember seeing that one in print, just about doubled over laughing in line at the restaurant that had it sitting out.

ETA - Note the date on that one. He was fair game back before the 2008 convention.
