And the other 1% would still be with us today, if only their gun hadn't gone kaboom.

The BEST gun and condition is a Sig G23 in 9mm in condition one with an empty chamber. An SOB holster is the BEST too.

"Condition one" precludes an empty chamber (or vise-versa). Israel does that empty chamber thing. I'll probably have an ice cream sammich or kid's soccer ball in my off-hand. I've practiced racking one-handed on my rig, but I'd rather not rely on the technique if I don't have to.

Well, if everyone is going to be just plain silly, 100% of dead people weren't carrying a 50 GI, so statistically it's superior to Tupperware, and they don't go kaboom, either.

well, they do go KABOOM!! actually, but that's the way they shoot and you can be assured that any blood you may get on yourself WON'T be yours - you just let the perp get to close when you put one in his head...

most modern handguns are very well suited for the vast majority of adults

There's the problem with generalities, they don't fit individuals too well ;)

I'm a short woman with small hands and short fingers. I'm a pretty good shot with pistols, not great, but some guy at the range did come over lately to ask, 'what agency are you with?'

For me, it's all about fit. Give me a Browning Hipower, Glock 19 or 26, S&W 3914 or CS9, CZ cocked and locked, 1911 with a short trigger, and I'll hammer you.

But there are lots of other pistols I just can't shoot well, grip is too fat, trigger reach is too long. I hate revolvers. Seismic Sam and I have the exact opposite problem with gun fit.

"Most" guns don't fit me well at all, some guns do very well.
Remember, gun control is not about guns, it's about control.

White Horseradish wrote: For normal people a carry gun should be comfortable to practice with, otherwise a regular joe or jill will not practice, and I really don't have to go into why that's "not a good thing"(TM). This is why I think alloy .357 snubbies are ridiculous. A gun you are afraid of is also not a good choice - people who are scared of carrying a 1911 properly would probably be better off with a DA/SA or DAO gun. The fear will prevent them from either training or carrying properly. So, the notion is perfectly valid for some definitions of "fit".

This is a good point, but it really is a training issue in my opinion. People who are scared of their own weapon are usually that way because they are uneducated and poorly trained.

White Horseradish wrote:While I am all for using enough gun, I would like to point out that as a private citizen I do not plan to engage in gun battles. I carry a pistol because I am not expecting trouble. Were I expecting trouble I would carry a rifle and bring some friends along, also with rifles, and, preferably, something belt-fed. Better yet, I would stay home.

I couldn't agree more in principle and I'm really glad you brought this up. None of us plans or wants to get in a gun battle. However, as a protective operations guy, I look at weapon selection through the prism of risk management. 10 years ago, I would have agreed that the criminal threat (personal crimes) was the threat to focus on. I don't believe that is the case today. Terrorist attacks domestically aren't going away anytime soon unfortunately. A snub nosed .38 is probably fine for dealing with a potential mugger, it's certainly not anywhere close to fine if you find yourself in the Mall of America when a Mumbai type attack is kicked off by a local cell. So just from a risk management perspective, in my opinion, the inherent capabilities to engage effectively at distance and put down multiple threats at distance are important in the selection of a defensive handgun given today's threat environment.

Thanks for the response. You bring up some great points.

Most people here carry for simple defensive purposes. What would recommend as a DAILY carry weapon/equipment in case the SHTF and you find yourself in the middle of a Rambo style gun battle in the mall? If your goal is to get to cover or run out of the building, the argument could be made that a revolver would serve that purpose.

GregM wrote:Choose the right tool for the task. Always good advice. My task, as I see it, is to defend myself with my gun if I have no other choice. In this situation adrenaline is foaming into my bloodstream, my sensory system is nearly shut down, my manual dexterity is severely impaired, and my pants are a mess. I need a gun that is simple enough for a retarded child --- no safety levers, no magazine releases, and forget about tactical reloads. The gun must be utterly reliable --- no jams, no stovepipes, no accidental discharges. And it must be very, very big. Proper aiming is essential, I know, but the encounter probably will be within spitting range and I'm going to be busy screaming "STOP! STOP! STOP!" If only one out of six shots finds its mark, I want to know that my attacker will bleed to death before the paramedics get to him.

Allow me to just toss out some food for thought on this...

Great points on the impairment of fine motor skills and the physiological effects of stress. These are great reasons to keep everything as simple as you can with both firearm and associated equipment.

That being said, you will usually perform like you've trained to perform, both mentally and physically. Tounge in cheek responses about stress aside, if you believe that you will melt down under stress and visualize yourself melting down under stress...then chances are that is exactly what will happen. Conversely, if you train correctly and often (both mentally and physically) to perform under the stress of a fight, then the chances are that you will perform pretty well.

On your last comment, terminal ballistics have a tendancy to be really inconsistent. That being said, the stated objective of any defensive engagement should probably be more along the lines of stopping a specific threat/action rather than trying to make somebody bleed out.

THIS goes back to my position, are we sheepdogs, to use a phrase others suggest, or are we there to protect us and ours, period.

Dusty. I don't care how good your training is, FULL house .357's in a 11 ounce gun is going to hurt, The idea is, if you carry such a gun, the five incidents of pain from firing the gun will only be slightly less damaging than the five hits of .357 on your target. I Keeed, of course, but I guarantee you 100% that a 11 to 15 ounce .357 mag is way too much gun in way too small a package for many of the people who need self defense the most. I am almost certain that if my 86 year old osteoporosic mom shot that gun, she would break bones. Fear built out of ignorance can be trained out, Fear built out of knowledge of the laws of physics can not be ruled out

Give her a K frame with 148 DEWC's in it, and she will do fine. but a J frame in .357 would put her in the hospital.
