Smith's extractor is like a wilson. Long the extractor makes the tension not a spring.

Kimbers are not, Kimber has now dropped the whole external idea all together on 45 auto's, There are reasons why.

I have never seen a internal extractor 1911 have troubles if the extractor was made correctly or if the firing pin retainer was fitted correctly to prevent clocking. The changes answer a question that did not exist. add that also makes it impossible to detail strip the weapon without tools, which was why it was designed that way, that in the middle of nowhere, you can completely strip the pistol to its base components, using only its parts as the tools needed.

Here's one more vote for the Taurus. You just can't beat it for the money. I have been extremely happy with mine thus far.

I've heard good things about the Taurus 1911. The only negative is that the finish isn't the best which isn't a huge concern considering the price. How is yours holding up so far?

It's showing a very small amount of holster wear, but I bought this gun to shoot and carry, not to pamper. Plus, I think a bit of wear adds character. You probably wouldn't have that problem with the stainless version, but it sounds like your budget is going to allow you to get something better anyway.

The Kimber external extractor may be an answer to a problem that didn't exist, but I have one of the external extractor Kimbers, and haven't had any problems with extraction in over 3000 rounds so far. In fact I have had very few issues of any kind, and it's probably my favorite pistol I own.

My budget may allow me to get something more expensive, but that doesn't always mean better. I'm still doing a lot of looking/reading and the Taurus keeps coming up as a really good firearm. Like you said the stainless version may be the answer. I've narrowed this down to 2 maybe 3 manufacturers. The only one that was on my list originally and still is, is the Taurus. Anyway, thanks for the info.

I haven't shopped for one, so they may be abundant at this price. But I spotted a Taurus 1911 in the case at Gunstop for $549 IIRC.

Shoot it for a while. Then if you don't like the finish wear, get it hard chromed

I'll throw in another vote for the Taurus. I bought one a year ago and love it. I had "the 1911 bug" and really wanted that platform, so I couldn't pass up Bill's sale for $450. Yeah, the finish sucks (or adds character, depends on how you look at it), but I've only had one FTE, and that was when it was dirty after a couple hundred rounds. Other than that, it's been great. I also have to say, I really like the the Heinie "straight eight" sights. With these sights and the 5" barrel, I tend to be more accurate with this gun that the others I own.

My dad and I usually meet up at the range for a few hours and shoot each other's guns. A couple 9mm, .380, a bunch of .22, and a .40. I always save the Taurus for the last gun to shoot, and it's a blast! We rented a Glock 30 (.45 caliber for those who don't know model numbers) and it just felt like a punishment to me. Didn't like it at all. I think I went through about 50 rounds with it, let dad shoot it for 30 rounds or so, I finished off with 20 more rounds. I got frustrated with it, cased it and pulled out the Taurus. Aaaahhhhh..... nice and smooooth.... That's more like it!

When the budget allows, I'm sure I'll end up with another 1911 eventually (I've heard they tend to multiply on their own), but right now I would still like a couple other guns for mission specific roles.

Taurus 1911 in today's Sportsman's Warehouse ad for $499.99. That's probably the best new in box price you're going to find these days. (I haven't checked Bud's Gun Shop lately to see what they are offering them at.) By the way, I think the same gun at Cabelas was $549 in their holiday ad a couple days ago.
