1911 Full Size

Anybody carry a 1911 full size? If so, What holster do you use? What issues could I expect?

I do. My usual holster is a UBG Canute. I like IWB, especially with the longer barrel. Any t-shirt I have will cover it.

I would also recommend an IWB holster. I personally like the Galco Royal Guard, but there are a lot of good options out there. The biggest issue with 1911's is training yourself to manipulate the thumb safety under stress. It's easy to do...just takes repetition.

I used to, in a Blade-tech IWB (which was OK), then in a Comp-Tac CTAC (way better). The main issue for me was the butt bruising my kidney after a long drive in a bucket seat. The other issue was weight, hitching my pants up a lot, like whenever I got out of the car -- but a good stiff belt would have helped that.

Now I carry a snubby .357, about 40% lighter. Advantage #1 is weight. Advantage #2 is the much less 'ordnance'-looking butt of the revolver; I am much less concerned about printing, or my open shirt blowing in the wind.

FYI - The clip thingy is functional but the pistol should only be carried in Condition 3.

Hey if anybody wants a 1911 ClipDraw, I have one for sale, which I used very briefly before I decided it wasn't for me, being a 'Conditon 1' kinda guy. (Joe's right, you'll notice the hammer's down in the photo. I always imagined my pants pushing the trigger when I sat down in the car and giving me a ricochet up the butt or some awful thing like that.)

MSRP is $20, it's yours for a couple beers, or a few hundred small pistol primers, or a heat gun, or a toaster oven, or a Dremel, or $10, or something.

I have carried a Commander size 1911 IWB and got away from it simply because of trust issues with that firearm. I now have an Officer size and another Commander size that are both trustworthy. I just got my minimal clip from Srigs in the mail today and will be using it for the Officer and maybe the Commander if it works well. I asked Erik to make sure there was enough material to fully cover the beavertail as I carry appendix (12:30-1:00). It looks like it will be great. Once I get used to that I will be carrying both of these firearms more regularly.

I don't know if condition three is strictly necessary with a clip carried 1911. Sure there is a marginally higher chance of an ND if you don't have the trigger covered, but unless you are jamming it in your shorts quickly, the risk is still quite low (no more hazardous than a stiff leather thumb break, IMO), and not only does the slightly higher risk not, in my opinion, out weigh the disadvantages of Israeli carry, but you should never "re-holster" (as it were) in anything approximating a hurry.

Remember, the 1911 has at least three safeties. They are very safe guns, assuming you know the manual of arms, and don't do something negligent.

That said, I use a Side Guard double snap IWB to carry my Kimber Warrior.

Yeah, that's true; I suppose the grip safety would also need to be depressed, maybe by the seat belt or my love handles or my elbow. Not too likely but it still bugged me.

I do have to say, due to the absolute minimum thickness, it's maybe the most comfortable 1911 carry there is. But back on the negative side, in my experience the gun can 'rock' so the grip angle isn't always what you think it is.

I carry a champion and have for just shy of 6 months when clothing didn't dictate switching to my lightweight .38. The full size frame does need adjustment when sitting in the bucket seats of my truck, or minivan, and the barrel length sits a little low (IWB) for my preference, but otherwise it's a great carry gun.

I bought a micro-compact last week to replace it, as the frame is .5" shorter, and the slide is another 1.25" less than the champion. Once that comes back from springer on warranty, I'll probably be a lot less likely to carry my snubbie.

Oh, and the sharp checkering on the grips does tend to grind on my fat rolls. But maybe you won't have that problem.

I use a Gunny model, named after our own mascot, made by Vlad, on the board here, Schleif leathers is his business name, I believe that Srigs makes one very similar. I carry a full size or a commander all day, every day, forgetting its there.
