Why no love for the Beretta 92?

Discussion of handguns

One more to add, that I hadn't seen mentioned, is John Woo.

Thanks to the influence of his movies, this is by far the pistol of choice when TV/movies need a gun. I like to joke that they must just have a whole crate of them in the prop closet that the pass around between all the productions. TV series especially are guilty of this, sometimes you'll see entire shootouts with nothing but the 92.

Obviously this says nothing to the quality of the gun, but it does certainly add a certain stigma around it that can make it harder to take seriously (if even only subconsciously).

LOL!

I thought it was only the anti-gun crowd that got it's gun knowledge from movies and TV.

I like this comparison better than 'gripping a 2x4'. ...Or maybe that's reserved for Glocks? :P

Agreed. It feels like a turd in your hand ... it doesn't point for me at all

But mostly, after learning to not use the slide release 7 years ago, I noticed that on 92 type pistols the safety will engage when racking the slide for me. I have owned two and they have been sitting in the safe. I have sold the INOX version which fetched a nice price with all the mods.

Other dislikes:
Sights suck....could go aftermarket, but I don't shoot it.... and front sight is integrated.
I have burned my hand on the barrel while racking the slide
Crappy trigger (not worth the money on getting it worked because of safety and DA/SA)
DA/SA
Serves no purpose for me (can't use for competition, carry or bed side.......I have enough firearms that can be used for all the other purposes with better night sight, short trigger, lighter weight, compact length)

Likes:
Eats crap ammo for breakfast, lunch, dinner
All steel, solid feel
I do like the half cock feature, but I don't see it being used in any situation....personally.

The only steel frames I am aware of for Beretta 92's came as part of the inox Vertec steel. they're pretty rare.

Not sure I understand some of your complaints. Sounds like most of you guys have small hands. My 92 fits very nice in my hands, has never failed to fire, eject or load. The price wasn't bad either. Not sure how some can say that for a little more you can get a Sig. I paid $540 for a new 92 and the comparable Sig was considerably more. Also, it's very accurate and fires whatever I put in it. Just to make some of you even more unhappy, my 12 year old son shoots my 92 very well. He wanted a .22, bought it for him and he won't even shoot it. He only wants to shoot the Beretta. I love my Beretta. I don't carry it because of size so that means I shoot my Kimber more. You know....that be proficient with the carry piece thing.

The Beretta 92 is far too common to be shown love by MNGT posters ;-)

Whoa, and 1911's are rare?

I have had several, and have a 96 still, while its a decent weapon, for its size, its clearly not what it could have been.

We did an NRA Basic Pistol course in Gillette, Wyoming yesterday. After completing the required course of fire, we usually try to get the students to try some other pistols/calibers with the idea that a little extra experience might be beneficial to these relatively new shooters. One of the women I was working with shot her Hi-Point .380 initially, then tried a Ruger SR9, a Glock, a Springfield XD and finally the Beretta 92. The Other guns shot OK for her, but the Beretta made her smile and reduced her offhand groups to about half the size of what she was able to do with the other iron. I'm sure that I saw a lustful gleam in her eyes when she was handling the Beretta. The Beretta felt right to her, it shot for her, I'm pretty sure that the Hi-Point will probably go down the road soon.

Beretta 92's make ME yawn  :o

I sold mine because there is no bushing to keep the muzzle from flopping around. At times I could visually see the muzzle was not centered after a shot. It's hard to be accurate when the muzzle isn't aimed at the same place the sights are.

The M9 is a few years behind the latest and greatest developments in handguns. Once something is accepted and implemented by the military it becomes a standard that everyone is familiar with. So, some of the noise surrounding the M9 is just because it is a standard of comparison. Also, if you issue a soldier anything they will complain about it; it’s the god given right of any enlisted member to complain. ;) This will sometimes give people a negative impression that may not be totally warranted.

For its purpose it is a fine firearm. It is a gun designed to be carried by people whose primary job is not to close with and destroy the opposing forces using direct fire. In the military if you find yourself using the M9 to hold off the hoards of savages many things have gone desperately wrong with no time for correction. I believe that in those cases you are allowed to use your last round on the idiot who got you into that situation. :) The M9 is made to be fired by the nurses and lawyers who work for the military; and most of them manage to fire it with an acceptable degree of proficiency with minimal or no training. The Army has plenty of 5 foot 90 pound nurses that shoot the M9 like a champ.

Chief complaints:
-On the civilian market the price is high.
-It is not a concealed carry gun and is heavy.
-The first shot = double action adds difficulty

So on the civilian market with the whole world to choose from I would pick something else, but that is not due to any shortcoming on its part as an issue firearm. I’m guessing that’s why it doesn’t show up as often in competitions also.

P.S. If the safety engages when you rack the slide it needs to be serviced. The military added this to the user level inspections a couple of years ago.

Edited, I got off topic.

i'm a little late to the party but i love my 92fs, granted is big, chunky and heavy for a 9mm but its a great gun for the range and common it's used in movies all the time and the good guy can take on a full blown army with just his beretta and we all know if is on TV it must be true so yeah this may very well be the greatest gun ever!!! :D

I dont mind the Berettas, as long as it is a vertec. I think the trigger could do with being a little shorter also and better sights out of the box. I also have a Martin Riggs mullet wig in my bottom drawer though so what do I know
