1911 why so special??????

Postby TH3180 on Sun Oct 10, 2010 4:41 pm

I am a newbie when it comes to firearms. I have been shooting since March of this year. 1911 what's the big deal? From what I have seen bouncing around the web, the 1911 frame has one heck of a following. What makes it so special? I have never shot one or even held one. I see people loving and hating certain brands like Glock. I look at the brand thing as just that, no different then cars. So teach me what is the big deal with 1911s? If I was going to try the 1911 frame what are some pistols to try?
Thanks,
Tim

I think that if you were to remedy this, your question would answer itself. :D

There are oh so many folks here that would be glad to help with this... I'm one of them.

My answer to your question.... No other platform has felt so natural or comfortable in my hands. It carries well, points well and shoots well. You can add anything you want in the form of aftermarket add ons, or leave it stock, and they come in all sorts of flavors from all sorts of manufacturers. Also, its basic design hasn't changed AT ALL in 100 years. Why fix perfection?
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

Rule #1: Glock isn't a 1911.

If yer considering what to buy, you have a lot of considering to do... There is no shortage of options. A Colt should always get consideration because it's the original and at the very least you need to pay respect.

History, man! Check out Legends of the M1911 Pistol. The M1911 is the Chuck Norris of handguns. John Moses Browning used a 1911 to kill the dinosaurs.

they're special because they cause those who like them to ignore all other design platforms or improvements that have been made in the last century.

Keep in mind Shippy has extra holes in his head (that obviously let all the sense and reason out). :rotf:

Improvements like magazine removed safeties, mushy yet ungodly heavy triggers, horrible ergonomics, fugly aesthetics, W I D E frames, poor grip angles...

Try a bunch of different guns and be sure to shoot a few magazines through a 1911 and I'm sure you'll get it. I own a few non-1911 semi auto's, but I only carry the 1911 out of all of them.

Yep, and took out the grip safety cause modern boy-males don't have the required hand strength to allow them to function correctly.....

Here we go again, another irrational brand vs body style debate...
Glock vs 1911 : Chevy vs. SUV.

No way I used Glock as an example of brand loving and bashing. I'm just simply wondering what makes the 1911 so special, that's all. This is all about a body style and nothing more.

It's not because the arguments are irrational that they are not valid. I love my 1911s because they are badass, great looking guns that happen to shoot well and feel great in my hand. My only rational argument is that the single action trigger of a well used, trusted 1911 is a thing of beauty.
I don't share the purists (hammAR) view that everything that deviates from John Moses' original design is sacrilege. Remember that John Moses designed a hammerless version too and presented both to the ordnance board for trials. So bring on the double stacks, rails, adjustable sights, ambidextrous safeties and full length underlugs... For some irrational reason, I hate external extractors, those are just wrong :)
I have a Colt Python and you don't so what do I care...
