purchase permit just approved, nics delayed!!!

Postby seethesvt on Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:17 am

I applied for my permit to purchase and received my permit in September. I went to purchase a Glock 19 today and was delayed. I figured getting the permit to purchase was pretty much a guarantee I could purchase. I had gotten in trouble 7 years ago, but I got a stay of adjudication. I passed the background check for a job at the airport, and for clearance through customs. I passed the background check for the permit to purchase. I hope I don't have to appeal a denial through nics.

Having passed the background check last month, is it likely that I get denied by nics?

Hello,
just a friendly two cents here , neither i nor anyone else needs to know what your trouble was, I would very quickly delete that post or edit it so it didnt show any personal information. That is your personal business and like you said, you have fixed it up so know one needs to know about it.
Now, as for the main part of the question, getting a permit to purchase is no guarantee that NICS will be able to pull their collective finger out of their asses with any great speed so dont worry. I have been buying guns for ten years now and every single one of those purchases was delayed. The delay can be for any reason, slow computers, name similarities, residential status etc. As stated you have a "history" in such cases it can happen that the NICS program can take a little longer just to verify that the issue is no longer pertinent to your buying status after which case you will receive a proceed. As stated there are multiple instances for calling a delay and i wouldnt worry too much about it.
If you receive no reply in three full business days from the date of your purchase, it is an assumed proceed and the retailer should complete the sale. Gander Mountain have their own policy on this which I want to say ends up being ten days after purchase (BS) which is one of the multitude of reasons I dont go there.
Another common delay causer is that some places are using eNICS which though a great system has the drawback of too much human involvemnet. Someone from the retailer needs to input the information, correctly, and then must check and recheck to see if NICS have issued a proceed/deny/delay which I notice a certain little place is really bad for and seem to prefer working on their own schedule.
Anyway, welcome to MNGT, go introduce yourself and stick your head between your knees and hold on tight, IT going to be wild ride

So your saying, I could get a proceed tomorrow and gander mtn will never tell me? Should I call them tomorrow if they don't call me?

No, no, they have to tell you, its just that sometimes the human machine is slow. Once you get a proceed you are fully entitled to go ahead and purchase that firearm. If you wish call the retailer, they are under no obligation to go run and check for you however, they store may be busy, the counter understaffed, the person answering the phone 16 and clueless. dont take it as a personal dig, call back and ask to speak to someone in hunting and if there is no one available the store manager and they will assist you. It would be nice if there were no delays but it happens so we have learned to deal with it, Hey in the interim, you get to go shop about for ammunition deals, currently wallyworld and fleet farm seem to be the local price point leaders but feel free to cehck about

what munchie has said, I had the same deal, and it doesn't get delayed consecutively all the time too, sometimes is everyother purchase, but luckily i think i have build a good rapport or the agency recognizes my name so I have not had a delay in years(knock on wood), someone also told me when your new to their system or you have more than one transaction they kinda flag ya and see if you are a goodguy, but dont sweat it dude you'll be ok if you got clearance for customs, hurry up and wait

If you get denied let us/me know and I can direct you to all the information you could possibly want on appealing a NICS denial.

Don't be too concerned about the delay. I have 100+ transfers under my belt and I have been delayed 12 times in the last 4 months.....and no delay in the middle of it twice (which throws me off). I have that NICS form filled out for requesting personal ID number, but I have not had the chance to go to the sheriff's office to get fingerprinted.

Until you receive notice that you are denied, don't be concerned about the delay itself. It is annoying however.

Many people that have a security sensitive jobs get delayed regularly. Military, ICE and others that have jobs that need a federal background check. wait out the time then call them back and ask if they got a proceed, deny or no reply from nics. hopefully then you can go pick it up.

And the other factor previously mentioned in similar threads is how common is your name, and are there some people out there with the exact same name who have been naughty. If your given name is Theodore Kazynski, all sorts of things could happen at the other end of the phone when the dealer is calling in your purchase.

My name isn't too common.
So, my job required 3, yes 3, federal background checks, twice finger printed. One for the job, one for the metropolitan airport commissions badge, And one for customs... so that could be the reason for the delay.... makes sense.

Don't be surprise if you get a visit at work by someone. Just saying, a friend who is in the federal employ has been interviewed twice after buying handguns. Now he has established himself as a shooter and collector, but when he first started buying, he was interviewed twice asking about his "mindset"
