Anyone here have a favoritte type of solvent use for cleaning their guns, I'm trying to find some new stuff to use. I've use clp from my old unit and it works fine but not a big fan of the odor and dries my hand. I've used Otis but it smells similar to the military and not a big fan of the price. Currently i'm trying some Safariland breakfree CLP. I kinda want something that is less smelly and hopefully easier on the hands, I hate wearing gloves while cleaning my guns so that will not be an option.

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. For the general post range stuff I use Hoppes 9 Why mess with success? For lead fouling I use Sili-kroil ( thanks to a tip from mr vvvrrrroooooommmmmmmm). For copper I use barnes cr-10.

Google "Ed's Red" easy to make at home works good for general cleaning, but not a copper remover.

Hoppes #9 for the barrel and Breakfree CLP for everything else.

I've used a little bit of everything. There are some new ones I'd like to try.
Some will say that Hoppes #9 is the best cologne.

General cleaning and stuff PAM spray oil or baby oil. Works just fine, no really it does. Bore crud or the krill and eds red or butches bore shine.

I've heard of engine oil but does 10w40 or 5w30 make any difference?

They do make a Hoppe's #9 air freshener now for those that need an extra fix. Seriously they do!

Is militec the stuff made by hoppes?

Old hoppes smells a whole bunch better than new hoppes. I ran across a bottle that's about 50 years old when I was "stealing" all of my Dads gun stuff the other day, and it smells a whole lot better than the new stuff.

For the dollar you can't beat Ed's Red, and it seems to work about as well as other stuff I've tried. I'm still using the last of a gallon which I think I mixed up in 2007. The traditional recipe calls for acetone which would make me nervous about using it on plastic of any kind (though it never obviously bothered the plastic or rubber grips on my guns). You can leave the acetone out and it's just not as fast acting.

Dean said he uses citrus based cleaner; I've thought of trying that to get away from the petroleum based chemicals.
