This posting has wandered back and forth a couple of times but had my interest.Gunstop Guy started it but I haven't read that he bought a derringer and I liked the looks of FatBoys Cobra so I have spent quite a few day running around looking at derringers and comparing prices and I finally decided on a Bond Texas defender in 38/357. One of the things that swayed me was that they have interchangeable barrels. You can go from 22cal. up to 45Colt. I was a little bummed I couldn't get 45-70 NOT!!!! I fired a Ruger BFG in 45-70 and that would be the smallest I would want to fire in that caliber. Pictures were quick so they aren't much to look at but you can get a size comparison.

On the Bond and or Cobra does the hammer half to be at half cock to retract the fireing pin while loading? I dont know about the newer designs of derringers but on the older ones like my Rohm and the Remingtons that was the case.

I can only speak for the Bond Arms but no you don't have to put the hammer in the half cocked position to load it.It does however have a springloaded hammer that allows the firing pin to move back into the recessed position.
A question I have that no one has been able to answer for me is,how do I know which barrel is going to fire first. I understand that they alternate but if I don't remember which barrel fired last at my last visit to the range, how do I know which is going to fire first this time.If I load just one round and it is the wrong barrel, I assume it is not going to fire.

Thanks to all who gave advice on this subject (especially Aftrshck). I paid off a Kel-tec P3AT today and I think it is a better choice than a derringer.

I just found this http://www.mouseguns.com/PocketAutoComparison.jpg

I don't know if it's been posted already in this thread, but I don't have the motivation to catch up on 8 pages tonight. :)
