Holland - you are right, there is usually a guy or two with a story of a guy he knows who is married to his third cousins sister in law that accidentally spilled some scent on his jacket and was violated repeatedly by some monster swamp buck. Story, Lie or fantasy - hard to tell after he had his 9th Brandy and water.

Westberg - we hunt 30 Miles North of Hibbing in the Bear River area and have had years when we see a few larger racks, but not so many lately. We had big issues last year with Wolves - seemed to have run off the deer as the harvest number were way down in our area. I think the DNR is compensating this year by making us an intensive harvest area. We are taking alot of smaller deer and noticing that most are fairly fattened up but others are pretty slim and not likely to make it through the winter.

We used to limit our shooting to bucks only but I think that added to the overpopulation by allowing those does to reproduce without being checked. The freezer suffered also.

Anyway, thanks for the photo's. We also have the fully enclosed stands - some say too cushy, but when you are out there an hour before sun up to half hour after sundown, it makes for a long day standing on a 2x6 nailed to a pine tree - spent too many years doing that. I like the idea of marking the shooting rail with distances to give you some idea of how to adjust your shot if need be.

I also tried the Southern Mn deal where you post guys on the end of groves and then drive deer - that is EFFFen Crazy- 2 guys we hunted with showed wounds they recieved from years of doing that. One guy lost 2 fingers on his left hand from being hit with a skipping slug and another guy got hit in the thigh when a slug ripped through some brush and still had enough energy to tear into the top layers of his thigh. I didn't like the feeling of that situation at all. Course being a tree Blind guy my whole life I suppose you have to get used to it.

Passed on what I thought was a smaller doe yesterday (thurs) only to discover today that my guestimated ranging was off by 30yds and she was a keeper. Didn't see her tonight, but ended up cutting the weekend short with the storm coming in.

There's always Thanksgiving weekend with the pointy sticks. :|

Got your monster swamp buck right here. Shot on my dad's land by one of my cousin's friend:

Here are 2 other bucks pulled out of the same swamp. Both with broken antlers and probably violated in many other ways by big daddy:

And finally, my cousin in Montana shooting cape buffaloes or something like that:

Not a Minnesota whitetail. A little four point mule deer after the snow we had on Tuesday.

We picked up 3 more on Saturday AM. Buddy of mine's 12 year old stepson popped a doe and her daughter (because it was hanging around the carcas - figured it wouldn't survive the winter anyway) and then 10 minutes later a good size spike buck stepped out to see what was going on. All done with a single shot .243 that he bought with his own money. That was one pretty excited 12 year old. He gutted two of the three and he was responsible - with a little help, for skinning and quartering the smaller doe. He did great - hacked it up a little, but how else do you learn. He's a good kid.

Sorry, this is suppose to be a picture thread and I'm not helping much with only stories.

We are in an intensive harvest area, so we have been trying to fill some tags to get some meat laid up for winter. We are now up to 11 total for the camp. The snow started falling and nothing moved from Saturday AM on through Sunday. I'm done for the season, but the residents are going to hunt through to next weekend. We'll see where we end up. We have lots and lots and lots of meat to convert to sausages.

I'll post separately, but anyone have any ideas on the best meat grinder and sausage stuffer - decent size to keep up to the type of processing we'll need to do? I'm thinking under $400. Just started researching.

Check the Bargain Cave at Cabelas. Got a Commercial Grade #12 grinder there for about $200. They may also have a stuffer that would work.

I'm seriously considering getting a mixer that can be attached to the grinder. But I'm supremely lazy. A hand-cranked one would probably be fine, but mixing by hand just sucks AND blows at the same time.

no pics, but happy to say I had venison tenderloin (and mock too) for dinner tonight -- unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your outlook) I didn't shoot it, so I still have my tag to try to fill. spotted a fresh roadkill on the way back from town this morning. a poor spike buck had survived thru the season in the zone south of me, only to get whacked by a car the morning after season closed! I was a little worried there wasn't going to be a lot of meat left, since he had gotten hit pretty hard, but managed to get 3 reasonably decent quarters off him along with good tenderloins. put most of the quarters into the tub to make sausage since we had to trim around damaged areas, but saved a couple roast-sized hunks for buddy to make jerky. didn't get a ton of meat, but kind of worth the mess and stink of cleaning anyway! still need to see something with antlers while I'm out on my stand!

roadkill - it's what's for dinner!

Both were handgun deer. I just posted the full story in this section. My 2 young cousins were sitting next to me on a log when I shot the doe. It was pretty neat.
