New rules for gun permits go into effect in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowans seeking gun permits - and those who already have them - face fewer restrictions under a state law that went into effect Saturday.

The new law limits the discretion local sheriffs previously had in denying the weapon permits without explanation. Now, sheriffs can only deny applications for specific reasons, such as a prior criminal record or drug and alcohol addiction, and must provide a written explanation.

Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner says despite the change in the law, he will still work to make sure people who shouldn't be getting a gun aren't...Let them take me to court.

Watch the video since the article doesn't spell out the whole thing.

I agree with Sheriff Gardner, I don't want people that shouldn't be getting a permit getting them either. As long as he is not preventing qualified people from getting permits I am on his side

No kidding. The point of 'shall issue' laws is to contain arrogant tyrants like him. And the fact that he made that statement on TV should soon bite him squarely on the arse.

Finally, a reason to NOT avoid Iowa.

Who are the people that shouldn't be getting permits? Who defines being qualified?

According to Iowa's law they will accept any other state's permit.

IA residents need IA permit.

Anyone else can carry in IA so long as they have a valid permit from one of the other issuing States. No residency issues. (i.e., I, as a MN resident, can carry in Iowa using my Arizona permit etc.)
