That is a wrong attitude.

We are just trying to assist you in determining the proper priorities that is needed to evolve into a self sufficient being to provide and protect the ones that depend on you. ;)

Be careful! Its a money pit!

I haven't had time to read all the replies but I'll post a little of my experience.
I have a DPMS AP4 carbine length which had the 6 position adjustable stock, I removed that and put an A2 stock, I didn't like it for long range shooting and most other shooting.

Carbine length is plenty for reaching out and touching those prairie dogs, I got a couple kills a couple months ago at 300+ yards (would have been shooting farther but there was a 30mph wind) with my 16" and a 10x mil-dot tasco scope.

Mine is an A3, which I suggest because you can always get the A2 carry handle and make it an A2 more or less, but you also have the option of mounting a scope much closer to the bore and more easily.

one thing you want is a bolt carrier that covers most of the firing pin, otherwise you get a dinged up firing pin, I need to replace mine.

MOST ARs are chambered in 5.56mm, which is compatible with .223 rem

Please Note the LARGE MOST in red. Not all so dont assume, ASK. I own a DPMS Mark 12 and love it. Made localy= huge bonus. Dustin is a nice guy. A buddy of mine bought an AP4 at the same time and is happy as well.
I kill tincans, milk jugs, and fruit, with out giving it a second thought. This is also how I answer my posts.

You're making me want to add another one. Just too many choices. If money for a sight isn't an issue check out the ACOG. Also you can check out GUNS magazine articles by Glen Zediker.
Do I need or want? I just need to prioritize.

I would start out with a fighting rifle to shoot first. A simple A1/A2 upper plastic handguard iron sighted carbine, with a collapsible stock. Get a thin profile pencil barrel. This is the rifle you will actually want to carry if you ever get into a SHTF scenario where you have to sling a rifle for days, because it'll weigh next to nothing, swings easy, etc.

Learn how to shoot it, and see what you don't like about it.

You can then always get a "bling" rifle if you desire.

I don't have a pic of my fighting rifle, but here is my "bling" rifle:

Image

RRA midlength, quad rail, EOtech, flashlight, broom handle, stainless barrel.

It's accurate as hell, but it's heavy. It's probably 3-4 POUNDS heavier than my fighting carbine. Trust me it makes a huge difference.

Many people take the wrong approach to the AR15 platform. They treat the rifle as a toy, buying as many aftermarket parts for it as they can bolt on, and create something that's sure fun at the range, but you'd never take into battle.

Remember why you're doing this. If you want to build a range toy, it's a wide open world. If you want to build something you can rely on if SHTF, build something simple with very little to break, easy to maneuver and carry for a long time, and functional.

Good luck!

BTW, check out AR15.com. They have everything and more you could ever want to know about our evil black rifles.

I think it was for contrast and to highlight just how EVIL and BLACK the rifle is :-)

Fast351 and I seem to be on the same page - no the earth is not going to stop turning.

He is absolutely correct - build the LIGHTEST rifle you can for a fighting tool. The lighter the rifle the easier to carry and shoot well in a CQB situation.

I despise heavy rifles for anything other than sitting there on a bench and doing absolutely nothing for you. A SHTF rifle should be dead reliable - simple accurate enough to score hits at a reasonable range and field serviceable.

Iron Sights are a must even with an optic - anything elsctronic is doomed to fail

Remember and AR doesn’t have to be a way of life. You can find one you like and buy it the way it is. That works too.
