Happens every few weeks, but I figured I'd post up anyway.

I got a really nice 1938 izhevzk there.

Please don't flame me because I am new to the firearms scene. My budget is limited so what is the advantage of picking up something like this? Is it just for collecting, for plinking, for EOTWAWKI? I am trying to limit my guns to common calibers where I can keep my ammo costs down and all I see in this is a another caliber of ammunition I would have to obtain.

Mosins are cheap to shoot with surplus ammo, and interesting to collect. History you can hold in your hands for under $100.

Fun to plink with, cheap ammo, piece of history, would definitely be useful in any SHTF scenario if you learn to shoot it, etc.

7.62x54R is an awesome round.

I have a bunch of Mosins and love them and the round. Like everyone has said, cheap to purchase, cheap to shoot. Whats not to like? Just don't sporterize it

Mosin's were made to be sporterized :P

I have one too and love it, but as an aside, does anyone know if they ever made ANY (while making the 5,000,000,000,000 that they did) with left-handed bolts?? That would sure be a bonus. I'd buy three of those.

No left handers. The only left handed Mosin is the one on the cover of the DVD of 'Enemy at the Gates'.
I think left handed soldiers were just beaten until they became right handed

Glad I wasn't a Russian soldier, in that case!

Actually I'm right-handed but extremely left-eye dominant, so I've shot long guns left-handed ever since I was very young.

I picked one of these up today. It came with bayonet, ammo pouches, sling and a few other things.

Any tips on cleaning all the cosmoline off it?

I took the whole darn thing apart and wiped what I could off of it. For the really hard parts I used some Mineral Spirits which seemed to work well. I was afraid to try that on the stock so I just wiped the crap out of that. So after a couple of hours work I have a cleaned and oiled Mosin. The barrel was filthy Lots of black and green crud came out.

Can't wait to get to the range tomorrow. :D

I probably won't be shooting it with the sling as that got a lot of cosmoline on it and I need to clean it somehow before using it.

Boiling water.

Take action out of the stock, fix bayonet, stick bayonet into ground, pour a kettle or two of boiling water over/through the action. WD-40 to dry, clean and oil as normal. Cosmo is like wax or petroleum jelly, heat makes it runny.

Typical capitalist excess. Kerosene is valuable for light and cooking, comrade. You must not waste it on gun cleaning.

I'm guessing a lot of people know this already but another thing to be aware of is that a lot (all?) of the surplus ammo is steel core. This is frowned upon at indoor ranges. I guess I will need to join an outdoor range this year as I have 440 rounds of steel core ammo.
