Proud new owners of a P3AT

Postby tt3 on Thu Jan 03, 2008 11:33 am

I wanted to get my wife a Christmas present, so we went last night and picked it up. :D
The girls were being CRAZY, so if you were at Bill's North last night, sorry for the disruption.
I picked up some ammo this morning, and we've just got to line up a sitter to go test it out. Maybe I'll start on a holster this afternoon.
Fun looking little pistol though....

They are fun little guns. You may find that the recoil is a little sharp due to light wieght and small size. I got a rubber hogue grip for mine. It really helped.

I forgot to mention I also grabbed the Hogue grip this morning too. ;) I won't shoot my Kahr without one!

If you get some FTFs with her right out of the box, don't fret. Spend some time over at ktog.org to learn about the "fluff and buff" process, by which you polish away some of the rough edges that can cause these guns to hiccup right out of the box. Doing the fluff and buff is no big deal but highly recommended. Oh, and just make sure the franken bolt on the top of the gun is tight before shooting her too. I'm not aware of them being loose from the factory, but there's reports of the bolts coming lose during shooting. Mine has always been tight but checking it to be sure is good preventive maintenance.

As for the rubber slip on grip, I think the hogue's fit best if you put them upside down. I tried one for a while but then switched to the beaver creek slip-on instead. The beaver creek model was less than $10.00 and had a tighter fit on the P3AT than the hogue did for me. No finger grooves on the beaver creek model though, but I haven't missed them.

If you're going to carry this, order some Corbon DPX for her. Produces excellent results in tests through both jeans and leather. Probably gives you about as much bang for the buck as you can get out of a .380.

Congrats on the new gun.

If you have problems and don't want to do it yourself, go back to Bill's and they should be able to send it back for free for the factor to to do the fluff and buff.

I just use ball ammo. Not like it will over penetrate, I am more concerned with the bullet getting deep enough to hit something important.

My new P3AT required no fluff and buff to be 100% reliable with both FMJ and HPs. Good choice in small pistols. :)

Cool, we're looking forward to breaking it in Sunday. If it coughs we'll go from there, but my expectations are ... well they are neither high or low. I'm running on the "get what you pay for" mentality. :) Thanks for the hints and advice, guys!

Good gun. I will tell you that it is a very snapy gun on the recoil. My wife will fire it to practice with when I ask her too, but it is not her favorite. I am not saying this to scare anyone that doesn't have one away from it but you do want to have the correct expectation. Have fun with it keep it clean and you shouldn't have any problems. Enjoy.

Congrats on the new gun. I just bought one myself on Thursday of last week. We just finished shooting (a little post work respit) and I put 50 rounds through mine. I was thinking Derringer before the booming voice of reality (aftrshck) convinced me to go in another direction. Does the hogue grip fit well on the gun? I have not tried one on there yet but I was thinking about it.

The little grip needs trimming but it seems snug. We'll see how it does this weekend.

Ok, so "booming voice" was an incorrect statement, shall we go with sarcastic?

I bought a P3AT about 9 months ago, did the Fluff and Buff deal, and it worked fine. However about 3 months ago after putting roughly 300 rounds through it, it began firing very deep into the stroke of the trigger pull. Ultimately it failed to fire completely. There was still tension on the trigger, but I would pull it all the way back and NOTHING! I had the Gunstop send it back to Kel-Tec and recieved it 10 weeks later. It seems to work just fine now. But I only carry it when deep concealment is a requirement.
