Hogs Gone Wild: disco network

Postby FJ540 on Sat Feb 26, 2011 11:10 pm

This show is pretty enlightening to the candy arsed nature of a lot of people in the US. SSS would do a lot of good, but it seems like the hippie mentality prevents people from taking matters into their own hands. Day after day, these people sit and watch as these animals destroy their land and threaten their children. WTF?

Meanwhile, I'd absolutely LOVE to take a weekend and go shoot me some piggies! They showed several dots on the infestation map on the show that were in western WI along the river valley (MN border), but I have had mixed results from my contacts over there as to the density of the pig population.

Are you talking about free range bacon?

Captive feral pigs are illegal in Wisconsin. Only data I could find is from WI DNR. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/wil ... PigMap.pdf

My former bro-in-law may still have a house in Barron Cty with 40 acres of field. Hmmmm, I'm not sure if he's a "don't shoot the helpless animals" kind of guy or not (my sister FORBID my hunting there).

Maybe my mom will ask him for me.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has adopted the position that feral pigs are exotic, non-native wild animals that pose significant threats to both the environment and to agricultural operations. The Department promotes aggressive removal anywhere feral pigs are reported.

Feral pigs are considered unprotected wild animals with no closed season or harvest limit. Feral pigs may be removed any time throughout the year as long as those choosing to pursue them possess a valid small game license and the permission of the landowner where they intend to hunt. Also, landowners may shoot feral pigs on their own property without a hunting license, under DNR's animal nuisance control authority.

For general feral pig information, contact Brad Koele Wi-DNR

The greatest population can be found in Crawford county. More specifically in the Gays Mills area, between Gays Mills and Bell Center along Highway 131. Dave Matheys is the wildlife biologist for that county. if you wish to speak to him directly i suggest you go onto the DNR website and get his email, he is more then willing to help.

Also, feral pigs are known to carry a number of diseases of danger to humans and the domestic swine industry, including swine brucellosis, pseudorabies and leptospirosis. So if you are going to consume the meat, it is recommended that it is tested.

I would think that these states that have hog problems would eliminate there hunting restrictions if they really wanted to get rid of them.

I don't know any state where you need a tag for them. NR's need licenses (as do residents in some states like TX), but that's a nominal fee. After that, it's all the bacon you can shoot.

My buddy went down to FL and shot pigs on his uncles land, it's just too far to go for a typical 3 day weekend (my work schedule).

I spend a fair bit of time tromping around the river valley near Osceola, There are signs of rooting around near the river bank, and far more reports of the them in WI than MN in that area.
A few years ago I talked with a USFWS officer who spoke at a meeting of a youth camp I belong to, located in Polk Co. It was his personal opinion, that even if you weren't a resident, or property owner, or licenced hunter, for a guy out backpacking, if you came across one that SSS would work just fine. He thought the taking of them should be done in any safe means possible.
Given that the area is mostly agriculture, and even though there's an expanding small farm/ organically grown/ buy local 'community' in the area, no one in their right mind, with an interest in preserving the wild, or agricultural environment, is likely to give a bleep if one safely rids them of these things....especially if one feels threatened by it.

If there that big of a problem and they want them gone! Why require any license nominal fee or not.
Wi requires a NR small game license $85.
I believe Ca requires tags.
