"Tactical" Shotgun Training

Postby FirearmFan on Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:17 am

Does anyone offer a good training course specifically for shotguns? I've come across a few before but I'm just looking for good suggestions. I'm asking in relation to 3-gun events. I'm fairly confident with rifle and pistol and I can hit what I aim at with the shotgun, but those pesky reloads kill my time. I've been practicing 4 shells at a time from a speedloader and I'm getting better but professional training is always good.

I wish. As nice as that would be I was thinking something more along the lines of a "broke ass college student who just got engaged and currently is trying to pay for a wedding and find a place to live" type budget.

I am not sure how you can afford good training. Even if the class didn't cost too much, the amount of shells you would need to go through is fairly high and they will not be steel buck shots that are cheap.

Just letting you know as the Saiga trainings I have seen have always been expensive.

Unfortunately, the training requires you to shoot as it closely simulates certain things that may occur in a live fire setting.

One thing you can do is to find someone that has been to a tactical training school and learn some of the things they have learned as much as you can by talking about it.

I might have exaggerated my income level a little bit. I have a steady job and relatively few bills. I can afford shells, plus I have a bunch stockpiled. I just unfortunately can't afford to fly down to Nevada and attend classes at FrontSight.

Since you're asking specifically about 3-gun and reloading the shotgun I'll just say that any of the "tactical" shotgun training I've taken never really put much emphasis on reloading the shotgun for various reasons.

However, forum member "Trubl" usually runs an informal weeknight league/training session for 3-gun stuff (shotgun and rifle) about mid-summer at Del-tone for several weeks, which just so happened to be just before the Tri-gun. But now without a Tri-Gun, who knows if he will do anything. But there is going to be a major shotgun match at Del-tone this year so it wouldn't surprise me if he at least does some shotgun stuff.

Other than that there really isn't anything local. It seems you are already ahead of most of us by admitting to practicing. (aka cheating) Keep up the practice. Practice loading smoothly and consistently. If you are doing the weak-hand style reloading and if you haven't already seen them, google up some of the videos from the AMU or the Noveske crew like this....
Yeah, but I shoot with THIS hand.

I hadn't seen that Noveske video but I have watched some from AMU. That is where I get my practice material from. I guess for now I'll just keep practicing. I am getting faster and smoother at least.

I know what you mean. Especially with the cost of flight and lodging going up, it is getting difficult for me to justify the cost of these classes. I make sure I note the classes that are near my area and make sure I attend those.

Not that I am an expert by any means, but at the next local 3-gun look me up and I can give you a few drills that have worked for me in the reloading department. I can also show you a few modifications to your weapon that might help also.

You can get much better at the loading part of 3-gun without ever having to fire a shot.

Thanks, I will do that. I should be at the 3-gun on April 10th. Don't you have a son named Tyler? If so, I shot a 3-gun at Del-Tone last year in his squad and he was impressively good.

Yes I have a son named Tyler. He's not bad I guess. Ha!

Actually he is now shooting 3-gun for the Army Marksmanship Unit in Ft. Benning GA.

I just watched Tyler earn his black and gold AMU shirt on Shooting USA! Pretty cool.

I was told he was on last night. Didn't get the message in time to watch.
