Question about laws (quick one)

Postby Huey Gunner on Mon Mar 28, 2011 9:44 pm

Hi there...so I'm a college student (U of M) and former Marine who is a Wisconsin resident. i own a hand gun and an AR-15, both purchased in Wisconsin. Do i need to have any paper work, registration, etc. to have these in my apartment in Minneapolis. I've been looking all over and can't find any info on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The police will be over to your house in a few minutes to bust down your door and haul you in. :D

No worries, MN has no registration for either. MPLS has a silly law against "assault weapons", but it's pre-empted by the state, so you're ok.

You can even get a MN permit to carry if you want.

Just curious....

Where do you get the idea there is a "registration" required?

Some states require registration for your firearms (CA and NY is what I can think of off the top of my head). It is common to assume this as MN is one of few states that require one to obtain a permit to purchase a firearm. Even anal states like CA does not have this limitation, but obviously they have other ways to infringe on your rights.

Thanks for the help. Just wanted to make sure there weren't any crazy, obscure laws about crossing state lines or something like that.

Years ago, my cousin's husband was tellin' me Michigan had registration ... I told him he musta been confused ... then he pulled it outta his wallet.

Not sure if Chicago's FOID is state-wide, neither.

I once sold a S&W 629 to a guy in Kalifornia ... deal fell through ... he found out, that particular gun (by sku) wasn't on the "approved" list. A ****in' REVOLVER, man!

It is... or was when I lived in IL. I can't imagine it's changed.

It has not changed in IL and yes MI still has full blown registration. Go to a match in IL , take enough ammo, no ammo sales without the FOID.

Michigan atleast when I lived there had what they referred to as handgun safety check for each handgun, You dropped off your handgun with the state police and a day or so later picked it up again and they issued you a card which stated the handgun had passed the safety check/registration. If you wanted to purchase a handgun you had to first go to the state police and get a permit to purchase for each individual purchase once purchased you then submitted to them for a safety check/registration. I dont remember if it was required for long guns or not but I dont think so.
