USPSA orientation at Oakdale Thursday, May 5th

Postby rugersol on Tue Mar 22, 2011 10:06 am

The start of the USPSA matches is Thursday, May 12th.

On May 5th, we'll be out there ... but we'll only have one or two courses set-up, and only for the purposes of getting new shooters acclimated. We'll be charging $5, to cover the cost of targets, pasters, and uprights. Everyone's expected to help set-up and tear-down. Please try to get there as soon after 4:00, as you can. We'll be well on our way shortly after 5:00. We'll need to be done shooting by 7:30 or 7:45 (this is a requirement of our conditional use permit ... no exceptions).

Also, every year, we lose RO's. At which, it's very important, every year, that guys step-up to RO. USPSA recognized RO's certified by the NROI. However, for our Thursday night matches, we do not require NROI certification. It's nice. But if we did, we couldn't have matches, anymore.

Bottom line is, if you're a class C shooter, and you're otherwise comfortable with what's going on, you're ready to RO at our Thursday nite matches.

There are a specific set of range commands you need to memorize, though. Even if you've taken the NROI course, until you've actually run a dozen or more shooters, using the proper range commands, it's easier said, than done. Before you attempt to run a few of the 60 shooters we typically get on a Thursday nite, I highly recommend you take advantage of this opportunity, May 5th, to get your **** together.

If you'd like to practice ROing, I'd suggest you bring some ammo, anyhow, and plan to shoot a bit (and pay $5). This way, we should have plenty of shooters, for RO's to practice with.

I'd bring at least 100rd.

New shooters ... if you don't/won't have a belt, holster, and mag-holders for May 5th, come anyhow ... we'll start ya at "low ready".

There's no commitment here. If ya decide it's the most horrible thing you've ever done, by all means, don't come back. OGC membership is not required. USPSA membership is not required.

AWESOME! Since my USPSA number is brand spanking new, I am not a rated shooter though. (Any chance to set up one of the courses as a classifier?)

I'll be there as bright and early as I can.
private or small grou permit classes available

I would suggest, if you were to get there particularly early, the chances would be QUITE good. :geek: ... "El Prez", has been mentioned. I was thinking of keeping the steel "light", if any.

I should clarify, the "C" class criteria is not hard and fast ... as Cap'n Jack'd say, "they's more like guidelines". Point being, we'd rather not have someone worry about themselves too much, 'fore we ask 'em to worry 'bout someone else.

Oh, and if you own a shot-timer, please bring it! (and if you're NROI certified, please consider purchasing one)

Please also note, this is NOT a match ... we will NOT be scoring (actually, we kinda will be, but not in any way ya'll ever find out how ya did).

I will try not to drift this thread to much.
#1 If I plan on shooting any matchs is this something I have to go through? The only matches I have shot is a few at BPR on Thursday night.
#2 Thursday nights don't work for me. Too far away from home, I have to get up to early on Friday. Do you guys ever do weekend matches that the general public can shoot in?

If you can, I'd recommend it. Good intro into the "real" USPSA world. BPR is only "similar."

I don't remember where you live (you told me, but I've got memory problems), but there are a few clubs around the area that don't shoot on Thursdays. I just think that Oakdale is the "best". :D It's worth it to attend at least one or two matches there.

FWIW, if there are any shooters out there that hesitate to attend a real match, but are still curious, this is a great way to find out what it's all about. Go for it.

I think I am going to try and make it. If all else fails I might learn something.

Any idea what it would take to recertify for the NROI? It used to be recertify with a yearly mailed in questionaire test but I havnt shot USPSA in years. Is the course still a two day ordeal?
