Stripped AR lowers?

Postby Hazmat on Tue Jan 22, 2008 12:28 am

First off I'd like to say I just found this board and wow.. So much good local knowledge in one place! I'll be reading for hours...

On to the point...

Who in town has the best deal on forged stripped lowers for the AR15? I'm considering starting my first build and depending on the price might buy 1 or 2 extras to lock up in the safe for future builds.

Thanks!

I'm not set on local as in the Twin Cites as I don't mind a nice drive every now and then. However with the internet I've found that once I add shipping and pay the FFL here to do the transfer I'm paying the same or more as buying local, so might as well keep the $$'s local.

I may very well buy a complete rifle at some point, but I'd like to build one from the ground up as well just for the experience.

On the web you can get a decent stripped lower for less than $100 plus shipping and FFL fees. (Check AR-15.com to find online retailers.) In my experience, at a brick and mortar gun store you'll pay $150-$175 or more plus tax. IIRC Bill's currently has some in that price range.

No Brick and motar here - mostly steel. DPMS stripped lowers $99 plus tax (6.5%). Also lower parts kits - $55! Go for a drive - I'm just 12 miles off I-94. Check my website for exact directions.

Get ready for TACTIFUN this spring! "FUN" is our number one goal so load a few buddies (we like ladies also) in a vehicle and drive west about 120 miles from MPLS.

that is a dang good deal on DPMS lowers.

BTW, the "tactifun" event looks like it would be a blast.

I'm sure this has been debated before. I cant figure out why you would be money ahead, especially when your not paying the Federal Tax.

Here is the pricing on my first build. When I was collecting all my parts, I was not being price sensitive, but if I saw a good deal I didn't hesitate. I also picked up my second upper from model one sales at the Tulsa show over the weekend, I paid $400.00 cash for a 525.00 upper. I priced it on their website this morning. I also get a lot of satisfaction from working on firearms.

117.00 Stripped lower new from Gun Stop.
59.00 Lower parts kit new from DPMS.
90.00 Ace Stock from a friend with a spare.
275.00 Complete upper used from DPMS at the state fair show.
40.00 Removeable carry handle with sight from a friend with a spare.
20.00 Ergo grip
20.00 Magpul trigger guard
621.00 Total

Most of these parts came from local vendors, so I didn't have to pay shipping. A few of them were cash sales, and you always do better with cash.

The owner of an online shop called G&R Tactical posted the following text to the M&P forum's Sponsors topic in the last few days. There are pics of the rifle over there as well. Granted, there would be shipping and FFL transfer on this on top of the hammer and trigger you'd have to buy, but it still sounds like a very good deal. The owner, Grant, is a great resource on M4, and offers some of the best prices on ARs that I've been able to locate anywhere.

In order to try and keep the cost down, we left out the trigger and hammer. By doing this, the consumer avoids the 11% FET. So you will HAVE to add a trigger and hammer in order to make the gun run.

SPECS:

I wish I could erase this thread from my memory... you're making me want to build one now :x

This is probably going to sound stupid but does DPMS only make one 5.56/.223 lower? If you buy a stripped lower is it the same as what all their guns use? On their website some guns are listed as .223 and some are listed as 5.56. What parts determine that?

I believe the chamber is the ultimate determination of .223 vs. 5.56, which is the barrel.

It can be a mishmash. I saw an AR-10 on Gunbroker once, where the lower said .308, the upper was stamped .243, and the barrel marked as a 22-250!

As I understand it, DPMS makes three different lowers. I didn't bother to look up this info so correct me if I'm wrong.
Single shot .223/5.56
Standard Milspec .223/5.56
Machined .308 based lower that all of the larger calibers are based on, ie .243 .260 .308

You really want to get this thread off your mind? I am self employed. After my wife went to work this morning, I went into the basement and assembled one of the 5 stripped lowers, that I have in the safe. This one was a DPMS and it got a RRA two stage trigger, Green ergo grip, and a magpul trigger guard. I don't have the stock yet, but I'm thinking a green magpul PRS. 8-)
