New Marlin 795 Bolt is Nasty lookin'

put about 80 rounds through it today, and it worked well enough.

Listen to me, The gun ran through 80 rounds of federal auto match with zero issues. so I come on here and say that it worked well enough. I'm disappointed with an ugly bolt, and when the gun works perfectly I try not to praise it too much.

I can't really speak to accuracy since we were shooting off hand at soup cans at about 100 feet with bulk ammo. but the rifle fed every round and fired every round. My '72 Glenfield won't fire 10 straight rounds without an issue.
124.99+8.91tax 133.90-25MIR = $108.90 at the end of it all for a lightweight .22 with a 10 round detachable magazine. And it works. I'm not as disappointed as I thought.

Awww, those "pits" on the back of the bolt are just high-tech pockets designed by Marlin to hold grease / lube ... At least that's what I'll tell myself if my 795 bolt looks like that when I get around to pulling it apart for the first time before I shoot it.

Seriously, even if it doesn't affect function, that looks like hell. Yeah it's only $99 when found on on sale and with the rebate, but "normal" retail price hovers around $149.00. The couple Mod 60's that I've owned had bolts where the back side looked like just the front - smooth and polished ... and, factoring for inflation, those guns were comparably priced when I bought them new ~20 yrs ago to what the 795 retails for today. Maybe Marlin now has the bolts made in China ?

Make sure your rail isn't canted first before you get all excited. Mine is. Looks like I'm stuck with the iron sights

IIRC if you send it back to Marlin, they will fix/replace it.

I need to get Tech Sights for mine, but haven't decided if they will go on the Model 60 or the 795.

They're probably still using the same stockpile of bolts they made back when you bought your model 60s. They must also store them in a pile on some guy's garage floor.

I'd seen a post on RFC.com about quality control on the dovetails. I brought a tall scope ring and a long allen wrench with me to the store. snugged up the ring and used the wrench as a straight-edge on the side of the receiver. I was satisfied that it was close enough if i ever used the rail.

Inspired by this thread, I tore mine (purchased from Cabela's in Dec 09 and hardly shot) apart tonight. I'm happy to say it looks fantastic, nothing like the bolt pictured in the OP. Okay, same basic shape, but you know what I mean.

I picked one of those up at FF recently for my son and the bolt was fine but the magazine wouldn't slide in or out without a lot of force. A little polishing in the mag well and all is good. The boy put about 400rnd through it without a hitch.

You are buying a 100 dollar rifle with the express purpose of adding a 70 dollar accessory, and probably making up the rest of the price difference between rifle and accessories with sling attachments for a 1.5 inch sling and a M1905/7 sling.

Another 20 bucks is essentially a non issue compared to the expense of trying to sell the rifle on the secondary market to purchase a new one.

Went to Bills North on Thurs afternoon.
put 400 rounds through the 795 in this trip.
225 walmart federal bulk cheap had 4 'issues'
100 federal auto match ran perfect
50 cci blazer zero problem
25 Remington 'golden bullets' 3 issues put those right back in my bag.

The rifle seems to shoot well. I was using the lousy marlin iron sights. I should have brought my neglected BSA sweet 22 just to see what kind of groups it would put together with cheap glass. The factory Irons were off quite a bit, I would have to aim for the left edge of the paper to hit the center. Then I kept everything on a piece of paper at 50 yards

On my way out of the shop I saw a 1954 Marlin 39A 20 inch barrel like a 'Mountie' $179?? so I brought that home with me.
I learned that I should look through the used guns section before I shoot. After I bought the 'new' rifle the range was full, and there were people waiting for lanes so I will have to wait for another day to shoot this new Mountie.
