1911 sights = Fail

Postby Mrblackis300 on Thu May 12, 2011 2:18 pm

Well yesterday I bit on a good deal and got my first 1911. It's a Springfield 1911 WW II Milt-Spec. I like the gun itself, but the sights suck. I'm pretty much total new to the 1911 scene. So anyone have a or some suggestions for some new ones?

Also here's some pics for your enjoyment!

I've never owned a 1911. But I have heard that the origin sight design is junk and I think that gun is a rep of the early design.
I love it when a plan comes together!

OP, the one that you have is not a target pistol...period!

It is designed as a weapon and has worked fine for those that needed them as such.....
many folks on this board qualified with practically that exact same weapon.

On the other-hand, IF you feel compelled to not learn to shoot this kind of 1911....
then there are any number of replacement sights out there, google is your friend....
or you can have the slide machined to accept more modern target grade sights.........

Recommended that you discuss with Ryan at Bill's .......all you will get here is opinions.... :P

I had Ryan at Bill's put on Trijicon sights for me. Staked in front and dove tail rear. Got the sights from Bill's so labor was included. About $100.00 total. They work great and are easy to see. Can't go wrong for that IMO.

I've been considering how to upgrade the sights on the Colt Government I recently got as well. To date I haven't found a "novak looking-ramped" rear sight that would fit into the standard dove tail. I'm very reluctant to hand my slide over to someone to have it milled for an actual novak, but might do that some day (or I'll just get another 1911 with a factory milled novak dovetail and be even happier that I left this government stock).

As for the front sight, I'd say based on your pics of your gun that my factory Colt front sight is taller than yours. Not sure if that's just the way the picture makes it look or not. My eyes are getting slower to focus as well so I put a very fine drop of white paint on the ramp of the front sight. It helps me line it up with the pure black rear sight. So far, so good, and unless I find some company that makes a rear novak looking ramped sight that will fit in the stock milled channel, I'm likely going to leave this gun as is.

When you decide what you're going to do, please let us know.

Good luck,
Mark

This is a military reproduction gun. As stated above, the sights are meant to be authentic more than useful.

I have the same Mil-Spec Springer - it's a hell of a shooter. It was my most consistently performing 1911 before I purchased my TRP :)

Nice to hear good things about it. I committed to buying it without much info on it. I think that if the very small front sight was colored it would help a bit. I'll have to think about it for a bit if I want to customize this gun, because once I start I'll have to go all way.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. I can just save the money that I'm going to spend on mods and buy another.

From another thread I post this, and Browning Hi-Power military sights may be a touch more primitive than than 1911 sights:

Pinnacle wrote:Sam and I bet that it shoots as well as any of the new wonderguns....

The BHP was my first pistol - What a gun. I miss it.

Actually, I shot the smallest 10 shot group I ever had with my Browning 9mm. And it was because I WASN'T trying to do so. Had just started handloading, and had picked a powder that didn't really work well with the 9mm, and I had jams and failures to cycle up the wazoo. It was obvious that this recipe sucked big, flat rocks. I did, however, have to fire it all off to retreive the precious brass cases, and back in 1974 or so being able to scrounge 9mm brass was simply NOT an option.

So I jam the last 10 rounds in the mag, rack the slide, stuff the gun out in the general direction of the target 50 feet away, and start blasting. DIE!! stinky handloads, DIE!! After the smoke clears (I was shooting Lyman 356402 lubed bullets) I go look at the target, and there, in a hole the size of the head of a house key (or quarter) were 7 of the ten shots. The other 3 were quite close by. Never shot a group that small since. I have heard about some other people who have had similar experiences with other stinky or cheap ammo (Like S&B) who were just burning through it as fast as they could like they were on an episode of Miami Vice and wound up with surprisingly small groups.

Wait minute, I thought 1911's were like shotguns: you don't have to aim them...

I don't own a 1911 (anymore), but if I bought another one, it would be this one. I hope you got a decent deal on it. It sure looks nice.

I had Ryan at Bill's Robbinsdale put on a set of regular 3 dot sights made by MGW if I remember right the sights were about 40-50 bux, Install is free with the sight purchase and I'll post up some pics

I had the same sights you did on all my 1911's they have now been converted over to these. He can also change the dot colors if you would like.
