I don't know where this guy gets his info- from his comments, I hope its better than

"Fluted barrels are more accurate."

Along with the comment about the blowback action not being able to handle a .22 WMR cartridge for pete's sake.

It's not a recall per se, but kel tec is acknowledging that keyholing can happen. They're redesigning the barrels in new production models to address this. Additionally, they will replace any old barrels for people who want the new ones (eventually).

As far as the fluted barrels, you're right. Fluted barrels aren't necessarily more accurate. But, given the same wight, a fluted barrel is stiffer than a non-fluted barrel. And since the update mentions the new barrels will be the same weight, it stand to reason they will be less stiff. Sounds like kel tec decided the extra time it takes to flute the barrels is not worth it, especially considering how far demand exceed supply.

More correctly, a fluted barrel is lighter than a nonfluted barrel of the same OD. I doubt a fluted barrel is more stiff than a barrel of the original OD. I am not really sure about the increased cooling thing, that was the reason behind the "really cool looking" fins on the old Tommy gun and Lewis guns had aluminum fins for a similar reason, but modern military weapons don't use them. Barrel fluting is mostly done for weight reduction purposes, not to increase stiffness, although now it is done for cosmetic effect more often than not.

I wonder about that comment on the same weight. That would likely require redesign (ie replacement) of the slide. Of course, if you are dealing with a blowback action, it HAS to be close to the same weight, or it won't work....

You're right. A non-fluted barrel of the same outer diameter is most certainly stiffer than a fluted barrel, all else being equal. It's just that when weights are the same, a fluted barrel will have a greater outer diameter.

Long story short, fluted barrels do cool faster, but not because of surface area.
